Breakthrough is possibly the best faith-based movie I have seen. Yes, that's a backhanded compliment. The movie is just as formulaic as you would expect from a feel-good Christian film, but it's well-cast and well-acted. It makes a token nod to the problem of selective miracles, but has no choice but to sweep it under the rug.

Decent acting by most of the cast, but I thought the script was lacking some better dialogue. There was missing a clearer recognition of the Christian belief that God is good no matter the outcome. Many moments are left superficial instead of exploring the impact this had on the character's faith in a deeper way.

Faith-based drama is better crafted and acted than most, especially during the first half hour establishing the Smith family dynamics, leading to a gripping and tense depiction of the accident itself. What follows is a repulsive depiction of the aftermath, where we are preached to ad nauseum about the "power of prayer", neatly sidestepping the insensitive implied question of "selective miracles" - would *you* worship a god that would kill a child because his faith wasn't strong enough? Garbage.
