he film is set in 1900 China, at the height of the Boxer Rebellion. A group of fearless Chinese patriots ward off European incursionists armed with little more than fists and flailing feet. Kung-fu proves no match for firearms, but it does slow the enemy down a great deal. (allrovi.com)

The fights were good and at least in the second half plentiful but none of them were truly remarkable. The first half is slow and repetitive and made me wonder if the Chinese attack strategies were really as ad as they made it seem in this movie.

Some beautifully drawn and enacted fight scenes strung together with some convoluted and flabby plotting; but the action scenes are definitely worth sticking around for (love the tridents!) - excitingly filmed, and tinged with the sort of daffy, cartoonish humour that Jackie Chan would later become famous for (a couple of well orchestrated kick-to-the-balls scenes are very amusing!).
