Box of Moonlight

I think it speaks volumes that we only ever get pockets full of sunshine but there's evidently boxes of moonlight to seemingly go around for just about anybody. I don't know what I'm aiming at with this. I like the idea of Sam Rockwell being a manic pixie. There's a subgenre of films that posit every once in a while a guy just needs to get out of his own headspace and sleep with a beautiful woman and then he can return to his family and be a better man, or maybe I took the wrong lesson here.

I really liked this film, but I'll readily admit that it's really just a Turturro/Rockwell twin character piece. Both are really great, especially Turturro who resists the temptation to overplay this really odd character. My one complaint is that Keener and Blount are introduced far too late to have time to develop as full-blooded characters, so the impact they are supposed to have is fairly muted.

Box of Moonlight, a film in which Turturro manages to shake his affinity for rigidity and routine, decades in the making, by spending a few days with Rockwell. Strong performances from the leads keep the film watchable throughout its runtime, but their characters do get a little tiresome by the end.

Feels like more directors of "quirky" "indies" have tried/failed to make this movie than even, say, RUSHMORE (even if they didn't actually see it). It's just real good is all. And real, real funny. There's a bit where Turturro's talking to his dim son "Bob" (POSSESSION ref??) on the phone quizzing him on his multiplication tables yet talking to him like he's a grown man and uhhh well would you rather me talk about Turturro and Rockwell bonding over sniffing dirty panties they found by the lake?

This is alright I guess. The score makes me want to rip my own ears off though.

Not a very good film in my opinion. The beginning was really interesting I thought it was going to be a mix between the Twilight Zone and Ground Hog Day, but it quickly descended into a formulaic indie film.

Thoroughly life affirming little indie, from the days when indies weren't ashamed to wear their hearts on their sleeve. The filmmaking style is basic, the budget minimal but the performances are great and this is a whole bunch of fun.

This is sooooo good!

I like what this film was trying to do, and the performances are good, but I found both of the main characters tiring. Maybe you were supposed to, but it didn't make the film any more enjoyable.
