The Wachowskis start with a strong thriller filled with genuine tension. A more raw and open expression of their themes and interests than their later mass audience oriented work, it moves from fetishistic eroticism to violent mobster action, successfully integrating both into something coherent and compelling. The three leads fit perfectly, and the camerawork and costume design shows off their Matrix-era aesthetics. Stylish and smart, without ever being overbearing.

Tightly structured, intensely shot thriller that turns from light eroticism to twist-and-turning thriller with ease, helped along by great performances from Pantoliano, Gershon and Tilly. Not a single dull moment.

Tarantino ripoffs cluttered the mid-90's: neo-noirs with pop culture references, ultraviolence, and non-linear timelines. Lily & Lana Wachowski were better than the imitators. Here, the gender politics are great--especially in the queer romance and criticisms of mafioso toxic masculinity. It's Hitchcockian in how it builds thrills in a confined space. And the camerawork's super cool. The suspense mechanics overtake the fun characters at the end, but that's a minor complaint. Highly recommended.

The Wachowski's cut their teeth on some noir before they embarked on making the world a better place with The Matrix. The story is fairly straight forward, so there was only one thing to do: lesbians. I'm not too proud to admit it worked.

Movie kicks all sorts of ass. Starts off feeling like a classic noir with that gritty, playful dialogue and standard premise, but quickly gets more visceral and genuinely unpredictable for a bit there. It’s a plot that genuinely keeps you on your feet, even all these years later. It’s queer representation and themes feel respectful and completely earned, and it’s still a sexy film with sexy leads, both of whom are genuinely great in this. Lucious intense and, best of all, really fun.

re: my A SUMMER'S TALE review my boat is making a beeline toward gina, not that she'd be interested in my skinny ass. joe pantoliano kills it in this, as does the wachowskis' camerawork which has fun capturing all that sweaty tension and need while showily mapping the location, floating through walls and down phone lines PANIC ROOM-style. not sure i see how it's covert trans cinema, but it does buck some noir stereotypes--i actually kind of like how laughably goofy the gangster stuff is.

Damn this is fun. It never exploits its leads, handles its heroines very well, & manages to tell a gripping & tense story while hardly changing locations. Snappy dialogue, a trio of great performances by Gershon, Tilly & Pantoliano, & even a Christopher Meloni sighting. There are a couple of overly convenient moments, & the realism of Corky's decision making is debatable, but those are really just nitpicks. All said, there's a hell of a lot to like here & if you haven't seen it yet you should.

My inability to get past both Tilly and Gershon stilted performances and detestable characters hampered my enjoyment of the film somewhat. Bound remains a decent film that maintains tension throughout the latter half thanks to Pantoliano, though the first half is filled with inconceivable silliness.

obviously makers worked hard to make sure story flows logically and seamlessly. resolving sexual tension at the beginning's a very smart decision, unlike other films and no lgbt cliches. a well-made film. definitely interested in seeing other works of wachowskis.

This started dreadfully with the much hyped lesbian relationship being laughable, with neither actress doing their best work and Tilly's unnecessarily breathless voice being incredibly cliché. But once those shenanigans were out of the way suddenly I was watching a very enjoyable crime thriller with decent twists and nail biting tension.

It's hard to take anything Jennifer Tilly says seriously, and Gina Gershon is highly butch in this, but I found myself glued to every twist and turn and riveted to the action as it unfolded. The story is complex and interesting, and the plot plays out in a not so direct line. You are never quite sure if they will get away with it, or even if they will live through their daring plan. The story is convincing, though the characters themselves are hard to believe. Joe Pantoliano was also good.

The acting sounds cheesy, but Wachowskis' debut, their first film about rebelling against oppressive relationships, is all about finding the most impressive way to shoot every scene, with the same sense of interiors that makes Matrix such a powerful visual statement. The directors move the camera back and forth, always in the dark, and place close-ups to create tension, attraction and suspense. Also, the sunglasses, leather jackets and somber rooms serve as great drafts for Trinity's style.

Tense, fast-paced and great cinematography. Gina Gershon was a weak spot, her only facial expression is 'derp' and her character and performance were too flat. Everyone else was good though.

Clever little neo-noir from the Wachowskis, showing a storytelling skill they should display again. If their direction is a touch amateurish, their dialogue is nicely crisp, and their visual sense (kudos to cinematographer Bill Pope) is promisingly slick. Gina Gershon is solid, if a touch flat, as the lesbian ex-con, but Jennifer Tilly makes a great femme fatale as the moll who falls in love with her, and they have fine chemistry. Joe Pantoliano, as her sleazy, desperate lover, is fun to watch.

A great noir/thriller. The first attempt at proper cinema by the wachowski's , later to direct the amazing Matrix. The style shows, the script is solid, and the uber-hottie gina gershon combined with jennifer tilly and joe pantoliano makes a fine movie!! Worth watching more than once.

The title and poster made me think this was some kinky lesbian film, and I'm afraid others may have the same impression, which is shame. This is a smart and effective noir thriller. Gershon and Tilly not only have chemistry, but they show they can act. Joe Pantoliano is solid in this, too. Don't miss it!

wachowskis, the saint patrons of macro photography pull no punches with their debut. it's pretty understandable why this movie never hit the radar after matrix, since it's got some raunchy girl on girl action no major studio would endorse. gershon is perfect as the butch, so is tilly as the vamp mistress. their chemistry is quite palpable, then again i'm no lesbian. the transition from lovers to partners in crime is a bit half baked, but still the film's full of style and some iconic characters.

Starts off as a really bad softcore porn flick with pretty much zero chemistry between the lead women and annoyingly superficial dialogue, but is then saved by the fun Tarantinoesque neonoir part, wherein Pantoliano steals the show, Tilly is mostly redeemed, but Gershon is still as uninteresting as in the beginning.

Starts off schlocky with the lesbian seduction angle (which is somehow both totally exploitative and also vital to the story's development) but once the actual plot gets moving it doesn't let up. Sure it's pretty basic stuff -- your usual mafia double-cross caper type thing -- but it is completely engaging and unobtrusively stylish.
