Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2
2000
Horror
1h 30m
To cash in on all of the "real world" hype of the events in the first film, a man from Burkitsville, Maryland opens a "Blair Witch Hunt" tour, which shows patrons various locations from the original film. A bunch of college students decide to take the tour, and wind up in Rustin Parr's house. There, they decide to camp for the evening, but in the morning, they realize they didn't sleep and they don't remember anything that happened the previous night. From there, they go back to town, and discover that something...or someone has come with them. (imdb)

The original came out when I was 13 or 14, I remember because in one of my grade 9 classes we had to do video projects and most of us ripped off Blair Witch. I mention this because every single one of those projects was better than this movie.

Capitalizes on the MTV-fueled hysteria of the original and the metafictional motifs of the Scream series with a self-referential satire of the movie's fans. With a non-linear narrative and surreal montages, the movie's an undeniably weird sequel, but it could've afforded to be even more left-field and still commanded an audience. It runs out of ideas by the end, but it's still unfairly maligned. Either way, this goes in the time capsule for 25th century humans to help them understand the '90s.

Book of Shadows might have had promise in its earliest developmental stages, but that seems to have quickly fallen apart. Blair Witch 2 is a travesty of a movie, plagued by poor acting, a script written by a Hot Topic employee, and direction that is more annoying than anything I've ever seen. There are a multitude of other problems, including editing, but I don't feel like getting into those. The movie is worthless.

At this exact moment in time, I'm ready to declare this the worst wide release movie I've ever seen. It's very rare you find a movie that fails at storytelling at this level. One that fails at mood at this level. One with acting this bad. One with pacing this bad. One with dialogue this bad. Finding a movie that does all of those things so apocalyptically badly all at the same time? Well, I present to you Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, the worst movie of all time.

a potentially really fascinating satirical metahorror, brimming with commentary on its predecessor, which unfortunately got absolutely butchered by an opportunistic studio desperate to ride on the coattails of the original. damn shame, but it still gets a decent rating from me - the more attention it gets, the more chance there is of the director's cut eventually seeing the light of day.

It honestly has brought me more joy than the original, its bad but its really good that its bad. If you honestly see it as a sort of comedic parody, try not to take it seriously, you'll have fun.

It has such a terrible reputation that it took me ages to finally watch it. Well, not that bad if you are into its self-conscious, satirical, mockumentary-on-found-footage-horror nature and the 90s-teen-crazy-video-obsessed vibe. It's just too bad it all turns to easy solutions in the second half. Also, the bland, uninspired execution doesn't help too much.

I would say this is better than its reputation suggests, but the ultimate feeling is still a let down. It is essentially a group of fanatics that get drunk in the woods and suffer the consequences. The rush to get this movie out when the hype was still hot from the original was silly. What you are left with is some good ideas with shotty execution. Joe Berlinger is a good director, but it is no surprise it took him another 20 years to revisit a film that wasn't a documentary.

Though it presents intriguing ideas & the cast try to work with what they have, it's not enough to save what's ultimately an absolute mess. Featuring a jumbled script & nonsensical plot, one-note characters who never come off like the satirized archetypes they're meant to be, & a bafflingly dull ending that does it no favors, it's an unfortunate example of studio intervention at its worst. In another world, it was released as intended & is likely better remembered- as it stands, it's not great.

Inevitable sequel starts out well, with an intriguing meta-spin on the events of the first film, and while slowly paced, the film does manage to create an unsettling mood. Unfortunately it all falls to pieces in the final act, as events unfold in a completely arbitrary way, robbing the film of any remaining suspense (or even dramatic impact). Completely tonally and conceptually different to Part 1.

This movie was obviously written by someone who doesn't understand how stories work. At times feels like a bad snl skit, other times feels like a movie trying to rip-off the premise of Blair Witch instead of actually being a true sequel, NOTHING this movie attempts is good. It's pretty impressive that everything could be wrong with this movie. Worst movie ever.

I am not sure if this rating would still hold up today if I went back and watched the movie, but it was accurate at the time I watcjed it. I must preface with the fact that I had just watched the boring Blair Witch Project and then gave this one a go. Just for the slight surprising (at the time) twist to what was going on in the movie, it was miles better and at the very least interesting enough that my eyes didn't drift closed at any point.

Really, really bland and completely pointless sequel to the original. Despite the history of studio interference on the film Joe Berlinger still deserves criticism for the film's central concept, that the original blurred reality and fiction beyond recognition, which would have been this tired and reliant on eye-rolling 'Is this real?' shocks even if the producers didn't interfere with it.

A bitching soundtrack (headlined by Marilyn Manson and System of a Down) combined with hot Goth and Wicca chicks cannot polish this turd. Deviated far too far from the original, keeping the like elements between the two only sparse, and lacking virtually any intensity whatsoever. You could take any three-to-five minute section of the first film and find more intensity than you'll find in this ENTIRE MOVIE. You can't sequel indy blockbuster with Hollywood polish. But at least there's tits in it.

Not a very good movie by a long shot, but not as horrible as I expected. I thought it was mildly entertaining to watch a group of students slowly go absolutely stark raving mad, and I think the film deserves a little more credit than most people are giving it. Not a lot more, but a little. The editing is confusing and the plot is fuzzy, but from looking at the whole picture I honestly believe it's all intentional instead of bad film making.
