This is the story of an egotistical nightclub dance performer named Raoul, his determination to succeed at all costs, and the only woman in his life that truly matters to him, a dancing partner named Helen. (The highlight of the film is a dance performed atop a circular stage to a truncated version of Ravel's "Bolero.") (imdb)

Carole Lombard doesn't exactly set the stage on fire with her dancing (at least she's better than Frances Drake, bless her heart), but George Raft does. Too bad his acting abilities, such as they are, aren't exactly suited to this sort of thing. But it's campy fun--we get Sally Rand's fabled "Fan Dance", and it's nice to see Fred Mertz (William Frawley) with hair! One bothersome detail for a music nerd like me: this is set before and just after WWI... Ravel's Boléro was not written until 1928.

Carole Lombard is in it! Frances Drake looks stunning! Sally Rand does her famous fan dance! But this movie exists solely to show off what a terrific dancer George Raft was!!! That was his career before entering movies and this is the side of his talent he rarely displayed on camera. So Bolero becomes a document of who he was.
