The Soviet movie Bogdan Khmelnitskiy (1941) is most of all visually impressive with it's long distant shots of the naked landscapes of war. Story wise it's not the easiest to digest, especially understanding who to root for, as Soviet heroes looks like what villains look like in the rest of the world. The heavy preaching style of acting doesn't make it easier, but there is a raw wildness to it all which makes this captivating regardless of the culture clash.
