Bobby Jones, Stroke of Genius

Sweet and genteel sports film/bio is a little too genial for its own good (with a hero whose bouts of temper are limited to exclamations of “fiddlesticks”), but if you’re in the mood, it’s a fun ride, with Caviezel clearly practicing his stony stoicism for his *other* big movie in 2004, and McDowell effective as an atypical voice of reason. As produced by the Bobby Jones company, and clearly fully authorised, this tells little about the man, but provides the requisite underdog warm and fuzzies.

It's sad that our kids covet trading cards featuring egomaniacal multimillionaires quick to say they're not role models. Can cynical young fans of extreme sports relate to a straight-arrow, 1920s golfer in knickers? I sure hope so. I would have preferred a little less profanity and alcohol use, but some families with older children won't mind hitting out of the rough if it means benefiting from powerful moral lessons. So so biopic about one of the greatest golfers ever. Everyone does their part here, but there is really nothing that makes it stand out.
