It's probably in the upper third of Mumblecore aesthetics wise, but this just feels so fraudulent. There's these cute little moments wrapped in a story that just kind of sucks. I want a movie where old lovers unite and a guy makes a move right away, gets denied, then goes home and jacks it. Mumblecore should at least have honesty.is anyone sick of abortions being used as this hugely traumatic moments that destroy men? That use a women's body autonomy as an evil character trait(nocturnal animals)

Enjoyable two-hander is too slight to sustain a feature film, but has many nice moments thanks to Duplass and (especially) Paulson's fine performances and their magical chemistry with each other. Wistful meditations on love's lost are very touching, though the crashingly literal finale doesn't work; a more low-key ambiguous finish would have been far more effective. And, as many have noted, Duplass unfortunately drops the ball in a major revelation scene at the climax.

I loved Paulson's performance in 'American Crime Story' and I'm a big fan of Mark Duplass, but I didn't warm to these characters, and I thought that Duplass was completely off the mark in a key scene towards the end.

A throwback to the olden days of mumblecore, if not to Wallace Shawn and Tom Noonan sort of writing, Blue Jay treads familiar territory and offers few surprises, but partly because it rings very true. Here and there it's a little far-fetched (like the recording bit) but most of the writing is truly excellent, as are both lead performances. Duplass and Paulson are awesome. I was moved.

An almost-great naturalistic romance movie that explores the power of nostalgia & young love. Hard not to compare it to Before Sunset which stands as the far superior film. Paulson holds up her end of the bargain and is phenomenal. I felt that Duplass' character lacked charisma and was ultimately a little too pathetic. Still, worth the watch for its cozy atmosphere and scattered touching moments.

Great performances and a well-crafted film that tells a complete story just through the dialogue of the two leads. It’s engaging and relatable.

There's not enough here for me to care about. It's a very small story.

Who hasn't though ot going back in time to relive their fist love and make things right? But it's a whole other thing to watch someone else to that. Just too much time spent watching these characters horse around.

Starts off charming and winsome enough. Mark Duplass and Sarah Paulson have great chemistry. There is a long, extended detour in the middle of the film in which the characters engage in a very drawn out bit of role-play. The section is a bit of a slog and uncomfortably long, but it's all worth it because the ending is a true heartbreaker.

I kind of liked, kind of hated, kind of was bored by this film. The leads go from genuinely charming to downright annoying, then back to charming, within seconds. It was an alright little flick, but I wouldn't watch it again, nor recommend it.

Such an overlooked film..

A realistic, simple and sweet film. Paulson really stole the show while Duplass' character was a bit distant and bland. Their past love story was a bit unimaginative and the moral lesson in the end felt out of place.

I don't care if it became melodramatic in the last third: It felt real!

A quiet and beautiful start, eventually crash landing into a mountain of moralizing and histrionics. Maybe needs a rewatch but my initial reaction was "what the fuck?"
