A high-velocity look at George Jung's (Depp) spectacular rise and fall -- based on the true story of how powder cocaine turned into America's biggest drug problem and how one man from the blue-collar suburbs became the 35 billion-dollar a-year conduit to the Colombian cartels. Ted Demme directs this riveting look at the manic allure -- and dangerous reality -- of a drug smuggler's everyday life, and unfolds one of the great untold stories from the recent annals of American crime and culture. A decent movie that ends up looking like George Jung's attempt to guilt his daughter into seeing him. True or not, and I lean towards not because this paints and all too perfect picture of Jung as a "not really that bad guy," I think it's a bit of a slimey thing to do and moderately insulting to the viewer to try and deceive them as such. With that said everything else about the movie is quite good.

It wants to be a Scorsese movie really, really badly but never gets close thanks to the lack of character depth and the standard rise-and-fall-of-a-naughty-but-sort-of-charismatic-criminal plot. Also, Penélope Cruz has a weird face.

Again an example of how a film gets a perception of being good, while it is actually the story itself and not the movie which is interesting. ... Overacted, lousy storytelling and a fairly blank approach to everything what could have been a very compelling film.

Remarkably dull both in script and cinematography. I don't even think Depp's performance was all too impressive considering how one note his character is. It has all the cliches you'd imagine in this sort of movie - the hero is a handsome, cool smooth talker which is emphasized by how every other drug dealer is a crude ruffian with comparatively less charm. The karma often comes out of nowhere and most events in the plot are generally inconsequential and uninteresting.

Gave up on this pretty early. Despite apparently trying as hard as possible to imitate Scorsese in general and GOODFELLAS in particular, the filmmakers make one bad decision after another and the overwhelming impression is one of falseness and insincerity.

Depp is always watchable, but neither the character or his story were particularly compelling. None of the characters were particularly interesting, now that I think about it. It feels a bit like a watered-down Goodfellas, with no element coming close to being as effective as Scorcese's masterpiece. It is by no means a bad film, but I'd find it hard to recommend it when there are superior efforts in the same genre out there.

A flashy but unremarkable film about the rise and fall, rise, and subsequent fall of drug kingpin George Jung. Somehow manages to be both sympathetic and damning, in an attempt to make him misunderstood he comes off as a caring moron, but if he was a moron how could he maintain an empire? Johnny Depp isn't at his best, Penelope Cruz is surprisingly shrill, but Paul Reubens steals a few scene as Depp's connection and slightly stereotypical homosexual. Could be worse, but mostly unremarkable.

Derivative, and doesn't achieve the lofty heights that it sets out to replicate. Nonetheless, this is a good watch. Almost has you feeling sorry for the fella come the end. But you would feel sorry for a man forced to wear a wig like that..

There isn't much here that hasn't already been done better in the genre's classics, and the parallels with GoodFellas run deep -- though it is nice to see Liotta play an opposite role within the same basic story. And while it may not be original, it's certainly effective. These are all bad people, but Demme somehow tricks me into caring for them. The film's final scenes pack an emotional wallop each time I take them in. A slickly entertaining crime flick.

Entertaining crime saga can never quite justify the interest in Jung as a character: an essentially closed off, sad man whose rises and falls are not especially insightful or illuminating. It doesn't help that this same sort of material has been covered with deeper insight (GOODFELLAS) and more spectacularly (SCARFACE) in the past. A terrific cast is the selling point here, with everyone in peak form - especially Liotta as Depp's flawed but well meaning father.

Watching this for the first time in 2019, the now commonplace rise and fall of a notorious crime figure narrative requires something special to standout, but Blow doesn't manage it. There's nothing we haven't really seen here before, and little about the production is overly memorable. Depp is effective as young Jung, but didn't convince as the older version and the story gets bogged down in too much sentimentality towards the end, with the last prison visit scene being a prime example of this.

A far from spectacular but comfortably above-par biopic: never really fascinating and with emotional stakes not particularly high, but it will keep you guessing as to what will eventually happen right until the end. It is boosted considerably by a very good Johnny Depp, aided by Ray Liotta. On the other hand, Penelope Cruz and Rachel Griffiths are annoying to death. The final scene was handled in a wonderful manner, prioritizing not melodrama but words and images that speak to the heart.

George (Johnny Depp) is in the right place at the right time to setup a cocaine empire with one of the worlds most notorious drug cartels. It is amazing that he could accumulate so much and have it all taken away. Like a deal with the devil to get a decade of living high and pay for it by losing his freedom and everything he ever cared about. It seemed too sugar coated to reflect a complete account, but still it's engaging and entertaining.

Blow; or How the World Conspired to Turn Me Into America's Biggest Drug Kingpin. Offensive & possibly a little racist. On what grounds do the makers of this film feel sympathy 4 this guy? (Notice the final scene mentions how some of his family still won't speak 2 him) Do they buy this horsesh-t? Is it b/c he's white? According 2 George Jung he's a nice guy who "fell" in2 eventually working w/ the likes of Pablo Escobar! 99% of minority convicts have the same sob stories - should they get movies?

Blow tells a story that I don't see much reason to tell. That is its biggest problem. George Jung is not a character that has enough drama in his life to make a compelling film. It's as simple as that for me. It's a well-made film, carried by a good actor, but there was nothing within it to make want to keep watching it. George didn't have many problems, and the ones he did have were self-made. This doesn't make him relatable as a character, instead making him someone who I wanted to get rid of.

In hindsight this got so much praise because of peak Depp, ripping off Scorsese while he was on a gangster movie hiatus, and the real story behind it is compelling. In a world where Narcos exists though, Blow pales in comparison. Cruz and the guy who plays Depp's partner both go psycho traitor out of nowhere and the whole time you're wondering what Escobar is doing.

Better early than later on, with the pace dropping and with it some of the entertainment. Jung’s character is a bit too perfect as well, presented as faultless with any immoral actions generally having good motivation behind them: apparently he’s just surrounded by scum, that’s the problem. Good performances - particularly from Depp, Liotta and Ruebens - a decent film but somewhat forgettable, especially considering how many there on this topic.

Johnny Depp gives a great performance in this film about the life and times of George Jung. One of the most prolific cocaine distributors in America during the 70's and 80's. The movie in a way makes you feel bad for the George; because all he really wanted was to live a life different than that of what he was born into. I firmly believe that George Jung just as his father did good be good at anything, but his home life screwed him up and it is deeply saddening to see in the movie. MUST_SEE!
