Blood and Sand

Mamoulian shows his mastery of technicolor. Powers gives an excellent performance, Anthony Quinn and Linda Darnell are fine in support, Laird Cregar almost comes out of the closet in his enthusiasm for the brave young toreador, and Rita Hayworth has never been more erotic. (Yeah, I know . . . "Gilda" . . . my vote is still for "Blood and Sand.")

Let's just ignore the way too obvious metaphors as well as the at times severely heavy-handed lines of dialogue and bask in the glory of Mrs. Hayworth's preternatural sex appeal, shall we?

I really like Power's presence in the films I've seen, the right blend of cocky and sympathetic to pull off a role like this. Love Rita Hayworth as well, really stunning. The film as a whole is a tad long and melodramatic, but it's a well told story that executes most of its beats really effectively .

B-b-but that cinematography though!!

Blood and Sand (1941) is most of all a beautiful movie. Lovely cast, splendid sets and scenery, and shot in stunning Technicolor. While I'm sure they could have tightened the script for a better flow, it beats the hell out of the Rudolph Valentino's famous silent version from 1922 and Spanish version Sangre y arena (1917). Linda Darnell looks so pure it's amazing. Rita Hayworth plays around in a devilish style. And needless to say, Tyrone Power looks handsome as the bullfighter. A fine classic!

Best line in the whole extremely- boring movie: "I spit in your milk!".

Sangue e Areia estreava há 80 anos nos EUA. Que literal obra de arte esse filme, technicolor full El Greco e Velázquez, ás vezes acho que não é dado o devido amor ao grande Rouben Mamoulian e isso aqui é só um exemplo de como ele é subestimado, dá vontade de rever o filme imediatamente para uma maior apreciação da beleza das imagens.
