Set against the backdrop of the chaos and civil war that enveloped 1990s Sierra Leone, Blood Diamond is the story of Danny Archer (DiCaprio), an ex-mercenary from Zimbabwe, and Solomon Vandy (Hounsou), a Mende fisherman. Both men are African, but their histories and their circumstances are as different as any can be until their fates become joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond, the kind of stone that can transform a life... or end it. This was a very emotional and riviting story, involving a father searching for his lost family in the heart of Sierra Leone, as well as one man's quest to try and strike it rich. It is a culturally relevent movie, one which gives its viewers a little insight in the world's most bloody and violent currency. The obsticles which lay in the way of Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou will keep you entertained from start to finish.

Blood Diamond is a very powerful movie that catches your attention. It is a very horrific movie that takes place in Sierra Leone during a civil war in the 1990's. For those who can withstand blood and famine this movie is excellent. It is very moving and compels you to want to help those in impoverished countries.

It's all a little too calculated to feel as impactful as it should, but there's plenty to like about the film, from the acting to the score, and the magnificent vistas captured by the cinematography. It's a deftly made film for sure -- the action is particularly well-handled. It's not that the drama rings false, but the movie lacks the power it should. It's still moving and highly enjoyable, but something's missing, I just can't explain it. DiCaprio owned this year, and Connelly is sizzling hot.

For some mysterious reason I really enjoy the expensive epic overdramatized beautiful R-rated movies for kids by Edward Zwick. Blood Diamond is not an exception. It is as expertly shot and executed, as the hundreds of skinny African women and children during the first half hour of the film, to the point that now I have to consider buying a nice poor little black kid for adoption or something. Thanks again, Ed.

This an entertaining action epic that never really goes as far as you think it should given its thought-provoking subject matter. The acting is superb, albeit at times it feels forced, but nothing else really is first-rate about Blood Diamond.

While it didn't quite pack the punch that I remember on the big screen, "Blood Diamond" still is a very entertaining thrill ride with some minor faults. Firstly, it's got some sappy Hollywood copouts, and harder to forget is a rare awful performance from DiCaprio.

Dicaprio and Hounsou are pitch perfect in a film that really shows us the true face of society and how many people dont even care about what happens to other human beings. This is the best film I have ever seen hands down. The acting, the story the visuals and the action are all at peak perfection and at points you just cant help but feel for those who have actually lived through this. This is one of those films during which you will be shedding tears before you even realize it. Nearly perfect

Tries too hard to reach a mainstream audience which ultimately left me feeling that the subject matter hadn't been given the care it deserved. I had a hard time believing DiCaprio in this role for a large part of the film, and I really don't care for Jennifer Connely. Hounsou is fantastic though, and the score is incredible at times. Even given this and it's formulaic nature it's hard not to get sucked in during the last half in particular. Pretty decent, but it falls short of it's ambitions.

Blood Diamond isn't an action film. It's an important film that educates. Unfortunately, the film's messages get muddled in the pointless and unbelievable love subplot. It takes a little time warming up to DiCaprio in his accent, but once you're into it he's excellent.

A good movie that strives to be great but comes up short; it's a bit too formulaic and sappy for its own good, but is redeemed by solid performances from DiCaprio and Hounsou, as well as a compelling based-in-real-life plot and the sheer ridiculous beauty of Jennifer Connelly (she has never looked this good). I enjoyed it but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it again.

I got the feeling Zwick was trying too hard to win an oscar with this movie. It's a mixture of drama, action, romance,.. .With themes like child-soldiers, diamond smugglers, war crimes, love, and even the essence of good & evil,... it's just too much. Great action and very good acting by DiCaprio. It was a very good and dramatic action movie and it definitely raises some questions about the situation in africa. But I think the lovestory was completely superfluous.

The story involves so-called conflict diamonds, illicitly mined stones that have been used to finance some of the most vicious wars in Africa. If films were judged solely by their good intentions, this one would be best in show. Instead, gilded in money and dripping with sanctimony, confused and mindlessly contradictory, the film is a textbook example of how easily commercialism can trump do-goodism, particularly in Hollywood.

Blood Diamond on first viewing was an incredibly compelling experience and I told myself that this was a great film. However looking back I can reflect on a few minor issues. Leonardo DiCaprio is impressive and he gives a good performance. As does the equally impressive Djimon Honsou. And there's no doubting that this film certainly features many shocking & horrific moments. However I personally just think that the messages that this film is trying to convey are swallowed up by the heavy action.

Critiquing film requires an evaluation of the directors goal, the extent to which he succeeded in maximizing that goal and whether that goal was valuable. Yes, this film is melodramatic and yes it is preachy, but both at least have a worthy cause underpinning them, with it going through all the facets of a problem that requires consumer awareness to be diminished. And it has done just that.

Terrific performances by the 3 main leads (issues regarding LdC 's accent are completely irrelevant), an action packed story and a body count to die for make this compelling viewing, but in truth, the rather unlikely coincidence of the three characters ( smuggler, diamond slave and gorgeous journo) meeting up to blow the lid off the corruption surrounding the diamond trade is pretty unlikely. BD suffers on 2nd viewing in revealing a thin plot stretched to incredulity, but still a heck of a ride!

The acting is great. The premise is interesting and pretty educational but the way it goes about telling it is messy. Blood Diamond is a by-the-numbers message picture, to be sure...But the director, Edward Zwick, is craftsman enough that the pace never slackens, the chase scenes thrill, and the battle scenes sicken. INCREDIBLY noisy actioner awkwardly tries to explore meaningful social issues - its points about the brutality of the African diamond trade are a little hard to stomach when unnecessarily brutal scenes of violence are used to add excitement to the film. Recurring refrain of the media's unwilligness to honestly explore the violence in Africa might be a little too ironic. DiCaprio and Connelly lack chemistry together, and are unconvincing in their respective roles; Hounsou fine but under-utilised.

It's curious a movie about blood diamonds that expects us to dissaprove them goes around the idea of telling us a story of the main characters recovering a big diamond hidden. But that's the magic of movies, we just want to see the characters advance, they seem to need the diamond for that, so we end understanding that greed but making it it different: Archer seems to us like desiring to stop weapon traffic and Vandy as a poor man that lives in a conflict and expects his boy to be a doctor.

Leonardo DiCaprio's whole presence here feels a little off to me. The story's supposed to be about diamond-digging slave labor and child armies in Africa, but then it's made about Leo and his white problems and his white romance, perhaps because Hollywood still thinks people are so super-racist that they wouldn't see a movie about Africans. And maybe that's true, but then this movie is just part of the problem.

Di Caprio - the ultimate directors' actor of modern day cinema, does not disappoint. From America to Africa this is one long bustle of an adventure. Some extra weight that Di Caprio's put on sits well on him in this movie. Tight, taut scripting helps make the movie work. At the end just about everybody feels for the hero. Blood Diamond over-relies on melodramatic thriller cliches and an absurdly over-the-top attempt at poignancy and symbolism. That is not to say that there aren't any scenes that do pull on the heartstrings. The cast is competent but they cannot breathe any new life into overused melodramatic motifs. However, it is the message of the film that is patently offensive: the film takes a very complex modern day problem and twists it into feel-good-journalism-has-saved-the-day tripe.
