It's pretty out there, with a late Bunuel-ian level of surrealism that is visually odd, yet not too obtrusive. It's all perfectly justified, as Ray believes he may be in the after-life (Hell) as he goes from one (actually funny) misunderstanding to the next. Overall, this is a genuinely funny rom-com, with the rom aspect hitting particular hard towards the end of this very ambitious directorial debut. Please make more films, Ray Lawrence.

Lawrence attempts to adapt a literary novel and fails, as all filmmakers are inevitably doomed to do, but in so doing creates a fascinating, beautiful, ridiculous mess of a movie. There's too much shoved in here (too many tones, ideas, plots) so that by the halfway point it felt like I'd eaten too much and it started to drag. Regardless, the first half is a pretty thrilling cinematic freak show so it's definitely worth experiencing. Too bad the R4 DVD looks like a VHS taped from the TV.

Mechatigger you hit the nail on the head - this flick was trying to be way too precious.

The convoluted cleverness of the screenplay obfuscates rather than illuminates, but it deserves credit for being different.

A guy dies and goes to hell but things aren't really all that different. Great comedy from downunder.
