I don't know that Blaze is a perfect debut, but it's something more interesting: confident, angry, imaginative. It deals with some really heavy topics, not least the feeling of being unable to do anything about them (there's a reason the dragon just sits there), but does what film can do about it: Shows, rather than tells. I feel like I need to dock it a few points for the ending, but hell, hasn't she been through enough?
