All drawn to the beauty of one woman, four men of various stations and generations enter into conflict with each other but also within themselves, each engaged in a struggle between their violent impulses and their higher duties, in a society and an age itself caught between the finite aims of power and visions of the infinite. The director pays meticulous attention to all aspects of filmmaking, and the result is a unique, cohesive and memorable presentation of a very well-constructed tragedy.

Innocence, faith & sexuality are in dire conflict with the structures of religion & feudal authority in this visually gorgeous medieval drama. There's a bitter irony to the story that gives it a nice tragicomic feel at times. Borowczyk is one of those guys who seem genuinely ecstatic about art & his films often seem to have this meta-text, manifest in sexual imagery & themes. Here the authentic period music & the fresco-like visuals also create a tangible aura of artifice to the film.

Borowcyzk's most critically acclaimed feature - a bittersweet medieval fantasy with gorgeous painterly compositions and aesthetics. Although I prefer his later, more extreme films, this is still worth a watch. I first saw this in a dingy art theatre with a ratty print which no doubt added to its otherworldly appeal.
