Blackwell's Island

Ridiculous prison corruption film which can't decide on being a comedy or a crime movie. Stanley Fields as the head gangster is too comical to be taken seriously while John Garfield does a Cagney-lite performance without coming into his own. This was a shelved 1938 production Warner Bros didn't know what to do with. While a lot of the movie is a catastrophe, the broadness and the shameless corruptions makes it sort of a amusing satire, but I doubt that was the intention.
