It's always refreshing when film plots are humble in the sense that they stick to simplicity and don't "try" too hard. Here, a fictional, latter part of the life of legendary Butch Cassidy takes place in the country where he died (we think), Bolivia. And the story - almost too simple - is overshadowed by the extremeness and beauty of the Andine highlands, stunningly caught, as is, smoothly, some hints of Bolivian culture. Plus, Sam Shepherd and Coster-Waldau make it excellently as Butch Cassidy.

Sam Shepard is certainly the best part of this whole thing. He works perfectly in the role of Butch Cassidy, who has grown older and more isolated, just looking for some peace and maybe a form of reconciliation with the family he lost. The cinematography is beautiful, especially in the scenes that feature the salt flats. It's got some issues with pacing, maybe going back and forth in time a bit too much. I didn't feel like the past parts were effective and they took me out of the story a bit.

Love the angle of Cassidy surviving the shootout and becoming an old man who just wants to see home.

A great premise brought me out to the theatre for this one, but it's gorgeous cinematography and consistent sense of style could not make up for extremely stilted, forced dialogue and severe pacing issues. Aside from the eponymous character, the majority of the performances also seem made more for TV than for this format.

It's not just a man enjoying a ride on a horse, it's a what-if story if Butch Cassidy survived the Bolivian shoot-out. It's got quite a good storyline going, and together with the shots of Bolivian nature it is a rather enjoyable film.

Arid and sluggish, with ostentatiously arty trappings. Shephard's Cassidy is little more than a grizzled cipher, and the film seems much more interested in gawking at purty Bolivia than concerning itself with things like plot, character, or overall coherence. Aggressively unspectacular, as a whole.

Went in expecting something gritty--a man struggling to overcome his past demons while dealing with who he truly is down deep inside--but what I got was a nice old man who seems to enjoy riding his horse. If anything, this film did make me want to go to Bolivia. What a beautiful country.

"Mateo Gil certainly can be held responsible for turning the iconic outlaw into a paper-thin Clint Eastwood-Unforgiven cliché." - Nick Schager
