An intense story of redemption, Black Snake Moan has a vast array of emotions making viewers forget about the absurdity and sometimes choppy pacing of the film and focus on the personalities of the characters and what will happen to them. With a terrific blues soundtrack and an impressive as always performance by Samuel L. Jackson, Black Snake Moan proved to be... Pretty good!

Tricky to classify, and yet nothing terribly new. Kind of interesting and kind of not, simultaneously trying to embrace its characters and have ironic detachment from them. After a while I wanted Brewer to just commit to being trashy instead of pussyfooting around it. The weakest link is Ricci. Her performance is unconvincing and a bit condescending. However, the Jackson character is quite intriguing. Not a bad movie, I enjoyed it. I just wish it had a little more... something.

Brewer seems interested in examining how people become damaged and the fraught delicacy of embarking on the healing process. However, that won't stop him from training his camera the writhing form of a sweaty Ricci and lapping it up in glistening slow motion. He wants to grimly assess all this decadence but wallow in it, too. That would be easier to shake off if Brewer's script had anything insightful to contribute about the characters it lines up to dutifully go through their onscreen journeys.

Samuel L. Jackson has his best acting since Pulp Fiction, interpreting a believer that recently got a legal separation, and tries to clean the sins of a problematic girl. The soundtrack is great, pure blues, and the script is bizarre but original.

Another movie that gets reviewed on perceived politics rather than as the story of two individuals. It's odd, and left me with a lot of thoughts stewing in my head, but I cared about the characters and I was very curious to see how things would end up. Great to see Sam Jackson doing something different than his usual bad-assery.

The two leads are excellent in this film and so is the soundtrack/score but nothing else is. Craig Brewer's stylized direction felt distracting, especially considering this is supposed to be a character study. There are also bad missteps in the script. It makes this a decent viewing but nothing more.

Black Snake Moan is pretty close to what a 70's Blaxplotation film would be but since it was made in a new millennium it gains and loses some things. What it gains is a story that is beautiful and meaningful; something that sticks with you. What it loses is the grittiness of being made outside of the Hollywood churn. I've seen this movie a couple of times and I've very much enjoyed it each time. Ricci's performance is fantastic. Jackson adds to his A Time to Kill performance.

Main message of the movie: if you want a person to adopt your religious beliefs, just chain them to a radiator and hold them prisoner until they turn over a new leaf! This movie has an otherwise nice subplot to it about overcoming personal problems and the aches and pains of living a hard life, but with holding someone hostage for the sake of forcing Christian ethics onto them at its core, its definitely a miss for me.

This film is a fiery, feisty, overlooked gem - at least for the most part. The first half is fuelled by Ricci's mesmerising performance - the best of her career - as a sex-crazed minx. This is worth the price of admission alone. Then Samuel L. Jackson raises his game to catch her and match her. Director Brewer has some wacky ideas and an eye for comedy. The denouement may be a letdown, but the film can't be faulted for its Southern spirit, surprise factor and some rowdy blues music to boot.

Great style throughout the whole movie, but it moves way to slow. Ricci is pretty hot I guess and she gives a decent performance. Samuel L. Jackson just plays the same character he played in A Time To Kill (if I remember correctly, it's been a while since I saw it). Some of the dialogue seemed out of place. I don't really like southern accents, southern culture or religion is general, and this movie is full of that stuff, so that didn't really help. At least the posters awesome.

A surprisingly strong effort, anchored by Jackson's performance, Ricci's hawtness and the pervasive presence of southern blues rock. Again Brewer casts his gaze on shallow character archetypes, mining them for as much depth as humanly possible. I prefer Hustle & Flow, but this odd couple have chemistry and the bizarre concept opens the door to some great dialogues. The script is shaky at times, but makes perfect use of religion as motivation without preaching. A strangely enjoyable film.

Jackson is way better than Ricci. Okay, Ricci can act, but she's limited. Chained, half naked Ricci was the salt of the flick though. The story was promising, while several problematic people tried to help each other as much as they can. But the biggest fault of this movie was the director: he could not do character directing or create a decent scenes. Always when a scene was getting interesting, he cut to the next. We are not going to talking about Justin's part here at all.
