The 30 minute long film looks at a rally to free the party's leader, Huey P. Newton. There's no pretense of objectivity -- the Black Panther Party shared in the copyright. Speakers at the rally included Bobby Seale, Stokely Carmichael, and H. Rap Brown, and there's also a short interview with Newton, in prison.

What an outstanding insight on the Black Panther movement (something I did not know much about). Hearing them speak of the struggle and how those same points are still brought up today; how half a century has passed and most things stayed the same, it just fills me with pure rage. Fuck the government

Heartbreaking that some of the issues covered haven't really improved in the past 50 years.

Focused on the campaign to free Huey P. Newton, which would in a way succeed, but without preventing the inexorable downward slide of his subsequent life, with the other major presence in the film being, probably, Eldridge Cleaver, whose wish to escalate violence would eventually be channelled into becoming a born-again Christian in Paris, a fashion designer of “virility pants”, possibly a Moonie, then a Catholic, a Mormon, a conservative Republican, and finally a crack cocaine addict. Sadly.

Powerful, yet curiously sober account given the fact Varda was so close to a very specific time of the Black Panthers Party's movement -- protesting against Huey Newton's prison and trial. Guess this will always be timeless, which says a lot about how American politicians and lawmakers just let hate and violence govern social relations through so many years, costing the lives of so many people.

While Uncle Yanco waxes about beautiful things, a sober reminder from across the Bay that not everything is quite so copacetic. This is an invaluable document, giving face to a time and movement that continues to pass deeper into mythology, even if its relevance has barely waned.

It's definitely better than my score might make apparent. (My PSI was 63, which is probably more 'fair' as to its quality.) But unless you are a student of the 1960s, it doesn't really warrant repeated watchings. (My rankings are based on how much I want to see a film again.)

That the moral of the film has mellowed, (hAS mElLOwEd) since it’s inception only elevates its relevance. From black hair to black beauty to black power - the current mainstreaming of the seeds of Black Panthers’ message is empowering. Bless Agnes for giving it witness.

Agnes shows us a day from within and aside the world of the black panthers, exploring the various moods and anthropological characteristics of the group. It gives a good taste, but it also remains a glimpse. Not much changed.

An excellent on-the-ground reportage of a Panther rally and its East Bay context at the peak of the movement with some incredible interviews with leaders of the movement. A little too slight and with an unremarkable narration, though.

For Varda's style and for the Panthers' radical positions.

It’s so nice to hear all these revolutionaries talk and the way Varda shoots them is great. The black panthers shitting on anarchists mmmmm that’s the stuff. Varda was weirdly obsessed with questioning whether Newton was actually innocent like the panthers (and everyone with a working brain) believes
