Very effective and suspenseful thriller. Obviously inspired by Hitchcock, and in turn a big influence on John Carpenter's Halloween. The ending is needlessly inconclusive.

A quite capable and enjoyable early slasher, elevated by some decent camerawork and charismatic performances. Was Saxon already rocking a wig by this point? Follows in the footsteps of A Bay of Blood in providing inspiration for a slew of slashers, ironic slashers and post-ironic slashers, and manages to rustle up a few creepy moments - those phone calls in particular are unsettling. The pacing is perhaps a bit off, and the conclusion is a mix of effective and frustrating, but this is decent.

Before Bob Clark would later make the iconic holiday classic "A Christmas Story"(1983), he would first make this Canadian thriller into an OG slasher/holiday horror. Although a few bits will feel a bit generic/dated now, the movie remains both genuinely creepy and suspenseful while featuring a good cast to help sled it along. A must watch for any slasher or holiday horror fans, but maybe better play it safe and watch Bob's other Christmas classic if you're with the family this holiday season.

Why this influential film surprised me & why I like it more than the far more popular Halloween (which copies parts of it & it inspired): the characters aren't mostly indistinguishable teens only interested in partying/sex - they're distinct characters w/ noticeably different backstories; there's depth w/ a theme & subtext about men trying to control increasingly independent women; & there are 2 compelling mysteries: what is the killer saying & what can it tell us about him, & who is the killer?

Deservedly a Canadian horror classic with (gasp!) actually well developed female characters who are funny and interesting and we are actually remorseful for when they are inevitably murdered. Margot Kidder is a standout as the drunk and hilarious Barb.

A really effective horror film. Crazy to believe we got a Christmas slasher movie before we got a Halloween slasher movie. Some of the acting is a tad wooden and it is slow at times, but it’s fairly short. It’s super moody, perfectly capturing a sort of bluntness people feel toward Christmas. I love how unconventional it was then and even still is today. Its feminist outlook and criticism of misogyny is as relevant as ever too. An actually scary villain and believable kills help! Recommended!

Black Christmas is a superior slasher that helped establish many of the conventions of the genre, including the extended killer's POV which is wrongly attributed to Halloween. As the rules weren't set in stone, there is a looseness to the style that's appealing but also deceptive; Clark is in complete control of the formal and narrative elements, fashioning an intense psychological thriller through tight framing and a chilling use of sound, which intensifies the feeling of claustrophonic dread.

Black Christmas is a bit of a landmark link between more traditional horror cinema, giallo, and what would become the "slasher" genre, with the youth picked off one by one by a mysterious killer and the "final girl". Because the conventions aren't yet set in stone, Black Christmas manages to appear relatively fresh in retrospect. It's not on "auto-pilot", which makes it slightly scarier than some later slashers. Still, long tracts of it are pretty dull, and I wouldn't call it essential viewing.

Supremely scary Canadian shocker predating _Halloween_ in its mixture of traditional holiday atmosphere with a psychotic killer's activities. This packs more suspense and shocks than a dozen of the post-_Halloween_ slashers combined, with a topnotch cast and a creepy open ending Clark later regretted. Once pulled from an NBC showing for being too frightening.

The mother of modern heavy-breathing slasher is also one of the best. The most terrifying telephone calls in the history of cinema are here -- is it a possessed man or just a pervert? or a sum of both? what are all these voices he impersonates? This is so well-shot -- every close-up builds tension with a striking, noisy score. In a way, it's a very silent movie. Every man is a suspect. Girls are stalked in their own house and don't know till the end the killer is right there in the attic.

Parts of it haven't aged well, but then again, neither has the slasher genre as a whole and this is a damn sight scarier than most of the movies it inspired. Especially the brilliantly unsafe ending. The fact that it's remarkably outspoken in terms of how young female characters are supposed to act doesn't hurt either.

This is a fantastic film. The killer is really damn creepy even though you maybe see him once, and the cast is great. I didn't expect what sounded like generic grindhouse pulp to be so terrifying. It's not that the performances are exceptional or the narrative is anything special, it's rather the ambiance it creates. By providing an unrelenting POV approach and a lingering focus on objects, Clark makes the familiar deeply unsettling: the ring of a phone, the mewl of a cat, the door to an attic, the bolt on a door. It's so brilliantly executed that even a jaded horror fan will be impressed.

Slightly slow, a little clunky and a lot of filler too. Still it's fairly suspenseful and can keep you guessing. The phone calls are genuinely creepy and vulgar even in contemporary times. A lot of people mention this film as a proto-slasher film similar to many of the slashers that followed it, but to me it feels more like a Canadian giallo film. The film is slow paced and spends a lot of time establishing the characters. The acting is decent and the film gets a lot of the little things right with the soundtrack and creepy cinematography. The ending is a little obvious but still effective and well written.

Since it's a mid-70's slasher flick, it obviously goes the route of cutting away any time anything violent is about to happen. So it's a slasher movie with no gore, that leaves all the other stereotypes, bad story, writing, and vaguely unimpressive direction. There's a reason that the roots of slashers have been generally forgotten, that's because the 80's did it better, and more of it--and hell even those movies weren't that hot.

I usually find the pacing and feel of pre-Halloween slasher films a bit difficult to get into - it all kind of solidified and branched off of there, so movies before that can feel a bit strange. But there’s definitely a lot of what the genre would become here - rising body count, mystery villain, jump scares, dumb cops, final girl etc. Interesting for sure! The number of phone scenes with the creepy prank caller in the middle of the film grated a bit though.

Variable dialogue and performances, shifting continuously from wooden to lively, but really quite well made, looks good in that 1974 kind of a way, does interesting things with sound, and generally gets better as it goes along, even though the standout performer (Kidder) mainly features in the first half. Finally a film that shows the viewer exactly why, if you want to locate the source of a call to a tapped phone, the receiver needs to keep the caller on the line for a certain amount of time.

Well rounded characters. Where you feel bad for all those that perish at the hand of the unknown killers. Sure, the girls don't "win" but it's about how the characters interact! The correlation between the main plot of a sexually repressed maniac spewing sexual vitriol before murdering the sorority house and the abusive boyfriend spiraling when he can't control Jess' body autonomy. So-so slasher movie which brings a touch of Dario Argento to American cinema. It proves if anything that pensive and pristine heroine Olivia Hussey is worthy of a place alongside Jamie Lee Curtis and Heather Langenkamp as an early scream queen. The atmosphere is about 70% Christmassy, 30% creepy, although when the killer does strike he does so in grisly and terrifying fashion. The plot is meandering and the ending anticlimactic though.

Helped to jump start the slasher genre! It culminated a lot of horror techniques and served as a jumping board for movies like "Halloween". The Christmas season and snowy, dark weather create a very creepy atmosphere in this holiday horror classic. My favorite slasher film, without a doubt. The best part? It lets you watch a horror film around Christmas! Also, directors take note, this is how you insert a message in film (in this case feminism) without being preachy. The message is quite hidden.

It's pretty clear that Carpenter was, ummm, "inspired" by a lot of the elements present in BC (the early POV shots, even the closing pan reminded me of "Halloween's" ending). It was very interesting to see a "classic" slasher that was made before there was a template. The voice actors performing the phone calls were bonzo gonzo. Absolutely wild stuff! However, some of the characters made some REALLY stupid decisions and set the precedent for many future horror cliches, so points docked for that.

Although made in '74, it contains many ingredients that would make "Halloween" a big hit in '78: mainly killer's POV shots and holiday season. These are still very different films: "BC" has a distinct 70's feel and almost reminds of a police procedural. It also decides to hide the killer from sight, and while not really that gory, it still has a very eerie atmosphere which keeps on growing towards the end.

Although the Christmas setting is virtually irrelevent and the gore is lacking compared to later slasher classics, Black Christmas walked so Halloween could run. The entire slasher genre owes a lot to this film. The acting is surprisingly good for the time, and many of the shots were new and innovative upon this film's release. Also, it's pretty much the only slasher I've seen to date where the virgin is killed first, and the female characters are strongly written and more than just eye candy.

I'm not well versed on the sub-genre, as I've always been a little skittish around horror movies, but this is impeccably done and does a good job of not relying on jumps and scaring with tension and atmosphere instead. The phone calls are very creepy and the fact that we don't really learn anything about the villain makes him even scarier. Good use of POV shots with great music/sound. Not very well-paced, but when the horror element is active, it's grim and effective without showing anything. For a while I wasn't sure where things were going or who the "main" character was; I guess I just assumed that anything charged with being "the original slasher" would be more predictable. Considering this pre-dates Halloween, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about with Halloween. Halloween was like this, but maybe a little less slow and a little less entertaining.

While its status as a horror classic and massive influence on the genre can't be understated, it has some problems that I can't quite ignore and it struggles to pace itself very well. The things it has going for it are atmosphere, a pro-choice theme that was ahead of its time, and a cool death or two. Beyond that, though, it often feels slow and the ambiguous ending makes very little sense and renders a major subplot fairly pointless. All in all, it's decent, but not amazing.

Would have been better with Barb as the main character; I just couldn't see myself caring about Jess. The film feels a bit schizophrenic, like sometimes it's more mature than the average slasher, and sometimes it's just as sophomoric. Scenes like the ending and the telephone calls are what the whole film should have felt like.

Effective early slasher; it's a bit slow at the start and the screenplay is a bit awkward but it ends up being pretty creepy.

Canadian sorority houses are so different from what I imagined them to be from watching American slashers in the same setting. Somehow it's less trashy than it has any right to be. I am not a big fan of general slasher genre, and they all tend to be very similar. This one is worth seeing just to explore diversity, if anything. Characters are interesting, and the film isn't afraid to crack a joke once in a while. Something tells me I won't remember much of it in a while, but it's entertaining.

An early slasher flick that seems to me is just revered because of the early part. It isn't very good IMO.

A horror classic. Pretty good writing for a horror film, though the finale has some very weak moments, it's all for a great ending.

Very dissappointed after years of praise from others.
