Blaxploitation Godfather. Nice soundtrack by James Brown. The rape scene was uncomfortable and served to remind me that I'm rooting for a bad person. Fav scene: his heartfelt conversation with his mom after buying the apartment.

Fred Williamson stars in this violent crime thriller that chronicles the rise and fall of Tommy Gibbs, a tough black kid from the street who ends up taking over a big chunk of mafia territory in New York. Williamson actually displays some range as an actor, and most of the cartoonish and comedic blaxploitation elements are downplayed in favor of serious drama and chaotic action. Super soundtrack by James Brown, and a stunning ending.

Superb blaxpoitation. Story's fairly regular rise and fall stuff, but the race issues, sharp suits, classy dialogue and ambiguous morality give it a sharp edge. Also has a killer soundtrack by James Brown

I didn't find the last half-hour, which is decent, made up for the uneven qualities of the first hour of this roughcast riff on LITTLE CAESAR.

Fred Willamson is great in the lead role of this film. The script is nothing special but it works. Overall I would recommend this film.

Aside a couple of good scenes, this felt pretty half-assedly done. The James Brown soundtrack is dope, at least.

A bit too much drama, and the acting is pretty weak all over apart from Williamson, who's a charismatic lead. A rather average 'rise and fall of a gangster' becomes a bit more interesting because race plays such a big part in the story. Powerful ending.

A decent blaxploitation, with the usual bad acting, violence and racism.
