A WWII movie about a Jewish girl who's hooked on Nazi cock? Right, there are some bits and pieces of a story on the Dutch Resistance and about collaborators here as well. Ms van Houten leaves a stimulating impression both with her acting and with her T & A, but after an interesting enough beginning this technically solid movie slowly degenerates into a mess. Also, how exactly is the local SD boss a good guy? He's just trying to cover his ass now that the end of the war is near. Hello Hans Landa!

verhoeven's films have at their core this idea that the stories we tell ourselves about our identities are convenient and self-serving, and i'm certain he'd hold up hollywood's holocaust dramas as perfect examples. the surface prestige and slickness is not in earnest; much like STARSHIP TROOPERS, he mimics and inhabits the enemy so he can unlock the back door and let in some uncomfortable truths. it could be more honed though, and SEVEN BEAUTIES did it better right down to the sex and feces.

Criticker wanted me to see this for quite some time, but I tried resisting it as I'm not really fond of war dramas. Turned out to be pretty, pretty good =) Also, some similarities to Tarantino's Basterds are spotted. Quote of the day: "Does it never end?"

Typical dutch movie, set in WW2 with some nude titty scenes thrown in. The movie is enjoyable, but has some annoying plot-holes and bad acting (why Hoffman?, this guy is terrible...). I hate it when story-jumps have to be explained by the actor telling what happened. My gf loved this movie, don't know if this is a good sign though. Anyway, not one of Verhoeven's best movies, helaas.....

Viewed February 20, 2022. This might be Paul Verhoeven's magnum opus: a cutting story about a Jewish woman in hiding who becomes a resistance spy during World War II, alternating between bawdy sexual humor and blunt violence, shot in a clean and expressive visual style, and tempered by a misanthropic moral compass that paints some of the regular Dutch citizens in as harsh a light as any of the (base, foolishly hedonistic) Nazi officers that occupy their city.

Balls-out action melodrama set in the occupied Netherlands during WWII. This Verhoeven flick has it all: Sadistic Nazis, collaborators, beautiful Jewish singers who sleep with the enemy, botched escape plots, betrayals, mystery & a big vat of steaming feces. And oh yeah, for the Americans, a short but sweet revenge scene. If weren't released 3 years before, this would have been a good adult answer to the sophomoric morality of Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.

Using WWII as a backdrop for a thriller is a risky move and, while Verhoeven does a very good job balancing those two aspects and creating a good movie, there's a bit of cohesion lacking. The bookends are awkward and the moral murkiness of collaboration is under-explored to make room for thrills and plot twists. Even so, it moves a long rather briskly, always held my attention and had some very fine performances.

It's quite well-made for Dutch standards, but it never becomes anything truly special. Van Houten was a great lead, but some of the other actors were so-so or downright weak (Johnny de Mol, please go away), line deliveries were often stilted and amateurish, and the soundtrack didn't do it for me. And in true Dutch style it needs to have copious swearing and, oh why not, someone being covered in shit. Classy.

Disappointing in that it adds virtually nothing to the WW2 genre we haven't seen before (apart from a little pubic bleaching). Watch out for numerous scenes in which a squad of Nazis machine-gun some Jews. And then a couple where the Jews do some machine-gunning while getting machine-gunned. Every scene feels like an obligatory Nazi-movie scene. The Dutch angle and the female heroine angle were both done much better in "De Tweeling" about 4 years previously. Seek out that movie instead.

Verhoeven gets back to his roots after couple of decades of making sci-fi blockbusters in Hollywood. He shows what he learn in America with entertaining but contrived narrative. He stays faithful to himself, and women in the film are fast to get naked. But also he does something that wouldn't be acceptable in Hollywood - ambiguity of war is shown in all shades of gray in scenes that are way too controversial in the context of recent foreign policy of USA.

Very good for the first 90 minutes, then it becomes painfully obvious that the writers ran out of ideas. Highly unlikely and "convenient" things start happening to keep the plot struggling along. It falls to the pathetic level of melodrama, canceling out any good it sowed at the outset. Considering how much more it could have been, I must recommend you avoid this film, due to its horrid failure to live up to its potential.

It's tits and squibs might sound dismissive but that's what it is. It isn't all that the film is but in a true Verhoeven-ian fashion those personal affinities are incorporated into a truly great thriller that excels at stifling hope at every turn.
