A really fun time, with surprisingly great visual effects and surprisingly well casted characters (except Brosnan, who I figured would be an awesome Dr. Fate). All at the expense of a cohesive plot and actual character development. I do think the perspective of a country actually looking up to a benevolent, revenge-seeker is interesting, but it wasn’t executed well, and I didn’t care about most of the characters. The action was exciting and really well made. It’s just way too familiar too.

Bland Adam. Basically a poor combination of Justice League, Eternals and Shazam! This is a movie I’ll probably won’t remember at all in the near future. Too much slo-mo and lack of fun. Pierce Brosnan was probably the best thing in it.

I can't make sense of this movie. It's has a lot of cool moments, but there's so much exposition dump and random characters and events out of nowhere. The main plot is baaaad if you take time to think about it: why make the movie about colonialism and imperialism if you're going to have the americans who don't care about locals come and save the day anyway… missed the point of your own movie much? To be expected from americans I guess. They even picked a samoan to play the middle eastern savior…

Over all, not a very good movie. Bad plot (stupid?). More nonsense than the usual super hero movie. Having said that, there were quite a few funny scenes and the main characters were generally likeable. PS - this is my 900th rating on Criticker!

It's exactly what it was advertised as. The script is non stop inserts of superhero movie tropes from the opening narration to the end credit's "we should talk." It's a bland superhero movie where everything happens, not because it makes sense for the plot, but because they wanted to fill a quota for generic blockbuster things the average moviegoer refuses to question.

While Black Adam doesn't have the innovative aspects of the script to offer superhero movies, the fact that it's a full action package, makes up for the story's weaknesses. Especially the casting choices is excellent. The chemistry between the characters is great too. I personally had a lot of fun. (10/24/2022 - Cineverse Metrogarden)

Exists in a pretty unique space in terms of the superhero genre. I'd describe the film's pace as either "breakneck" or "it doesn't have any", as it slams wildly through plot points like BA through bedroom walls. But there was a lot of fun to be had here. Johnson embraces the role to the point where it doesn't feel like "The Rock playing a super hero". By and large the visuals are great, aside from some moments of wonky CGI. Pedestrian screenplay but stuffed full of world-building and fun ideas.

It is hard for me to admit because I'm extremely proud of my memory; but I saw this movie on flight and I do not remember anything of it; I don't even muster the origin story of Black Adam (and I'm a comic buff, mind you) out of it; it was that bad. DC couldn't even do decent movies with its main characters; I think it should stay away from this mailing the side characters business.

There's almost nothing that memorably stands out in Black Adam, with almost everything shown, said and done having already been seen, said and done in the multitude of other superhero movies over the past 15 years. This makes BA feel like a made by committee box checking effort and the fact that recent DC changes are likely to mean a sequel isn't going to happen comes as no shock or loss.

Not sure it this is a thing yet (begging it ain't), but aesthetically this feel like a "retro-early-2000s" movie with all the horrible CGI enhanced camera moves and overdone color grading that action movies from those days were known for. As for the script and dialogue especially: the less said the better. A shame because the cast seemed game enough.

Black Adam is a decent if by-the-numbers entry, reminding us that the DCEU is still a thing. The cast & setting (drawing on regional ancient history) would be the most refreshing part, had the fictional society had more authenticity & not felt like an immigrant community in NYC. By the final act, the film looks like it was shot on an ever shrinking studio stage. It's still somewhat enjoyable, but the messaging is lip-service. Shahi & Brosnan are good. Johnson is a prop. I'd watch a sequel.

Some popular songs were egregiously unsubtle & many comedy bits just lay there. The fight scenes were also frequently unclear & unsatisfying. Having a kid as a co-star was also a turn-off & Cyclone's outfit & rainbow hurricanes looked silly. I also didn't need Carter Hall to be super strong (or black) but the movie (& DEI mandate) does. Still, the JSA's ethical ambiguities worked for me, as did the character interactions - esp Adam's consistently dark & comicbook faithful Outta My Way vibe

Black Adam hits in a lot of the same areas that DC’s Aquaman also excelled in. It’s visually pleasing, very solid pacing, fun characters, and lots of fun action sets. It’s very easy to sit down and have a good time with this in that regard. However, much like Aquaman, it’s story and universe elements are very sloppy and pretty barebones for an introduction for this character, and it makes the overall story feel like an afterthought, especially in regards to our antagonist. Still…not bad.

It is nothing we have not seen before from a superhero film. That being said I loved the JSA in this film. Especially Dr. Fate. Brosnan steals the show. It was just too simple from a story stand point with predictable action beats. Johnson is servicable but doesn't even stand out in his movie. I hope this leads to a JSA series or movie set in the past with the original members.

Jaume Collet-Serra provides steady-handed but anonymous direction. In some ways it’s the best approach to the material, which delivers the expected, endless volleys of CGI-heavy, slo-mo action scenes and trusts Johnson’s charisma to do a lot of heavy lifting. But even that’s merely serviceable. His natural charm doesn’t really match Teth-Adam’s murderous rage particularly well, but he gets the job done. So does the movie, which feels like a labor of love but with all the love removed.

Absolute slop. I'm not sure I've ever seen worse attempts at comic relief. Johnson is so wooden, it's unbelievable. This guy used to have so much charisma! Combine that with a world of CGI no stakes, and you've got an extremely souless experience. Some points for Brosnan's Dr. Fate who atleast had a little gravitas, and the notion of the Justice Society, that hinted at a more interesting movie if the focus was on them.

Not as bad as most would say. Other than lack luster writing, character development, plot, and acting it only real problem is pacing. Which is solved by watching at around 1.25x. It has enough cool & fun moments to carry it and seeing an "anti-hero" superman is actually fairly interesting. Though they should've made him worse. A touch more Magneto and T2 would've done wonders for the character.

I liked this movie. The kid was a bit cheesy, but... well... better than Shazam! And the plot and characters mostly made sense. I felt like... Black Adam's power portfolio and presentation were a bit too similar to Superman and the villain was totally forgettable. The Justice Society was a more notable rival but didn't make a ton of sense or get enough development.

A passably diverting effort has reasonably compelling action scenes, some amusing patter in the screenplay, and reliably solid work from Johnson to anchor the thing. But it all feels so mechanical and warmed over, self-consciously trying to imitate the style of the MCU (especially the quippy humour) that it sort of falls flat, despite there being nothing “wrong” with the production. Might be a minor spoiler to say the use of the wrong Superman theme at a key moment was an irritation.

I had extremely low expectations and I think that helped. Brosnan was fun as Dr. Fate, but everyone else was kind of meh. There’s no gravity to almost any of the action because Black Adam is pretty much invincible. The villain is very bland and the plot isn’t any better. It’s fine for comic book movie fans. While Black Adam provides solid entertainment with stunning action sequences, likable characters, and solid visual effects work, it doesn't break new ground in the superhero genre. Dwayne Johnson delivers a stern and commanding performance as Black Adam, but the film's story lacks excitement, and the villain falls flat. Despite its flaws, it lays a foundation for future stories that could prove more interesting.

At it most enjoyable when it leans into the dark humor of the fact its protagonists doesn't follow the typical moral code of typical superheroes. The Rock can be selfmockingly funny, alas he gets too few opportunities to be so.I also liked how the JLS was portrayed as the protector of the status-quo. Pierce Brosnan is in form as dr. Fate and in fact almost steals the movie from the title character. Unfortunately these good parts are underutilized and buried into a mediocre superhero blockbuster.

I think this movie is better than it gets credit for. It's excellently violent, and The Rock is excellent as Black Adam. I'm glad he was finally able to get this movie made after trying for so many years, and I'm upset that this version of Black Adam won't be continuing into James Gunn's new DC Universe, nor will we see the teased interaction with Superman, or even Shazam (unless there's a surprise cameo in Shazam 2 or something). I would like to see the R rated version.

At points it has a pretty low rent almost mid 00s action sci-fi feel to it, but then other sequences are pretty fun and it has a couple twists that make me go “ok that’s neat I guess.” Too many bullets bouncing off of invincible people. Villain was a bit strange and underdeveloped; became Satan out of nowhere. Sarah Shahi is hot and it was neat to see Pierce Brosnan. Mid-credits scene goes down pretty bitter seeing it for the first time after Cavill being dumped.

The Justice Society of America would absolutely arrive in the Middle East only to explicitly uphold the paramilitary status quo and it’s sexy of this film to admit it - even if it forgets to do anything about it and instead devolves into the CGI-saturated superhero chaos we’ve seen a thousand times before. A refreshing superhero foil Black Adam is not, thanks to a shallow script, limited vision, and just a nothing framework - but he very nearly was, and that’s a shame.

It's not bad, but it feels like a thousand movies before it. Strong The Mummy vibes throughout. I feel like DC have entered the niche of Marvel's humor. Most of the superheroes were pointless, like the rainbow girl and the costumed Hulk. The one time he could have been useful was to smash all of those tiny mummies just by walking over them, but alas. Why can't DC be even slightly as interesting as Marvel? All this Zack Snyderish crap is dark, sad and basically a spaghetti western superhero paradigm. Perfectly sums up the DC ethos: simultaneously the best and the worst of superhero movie tropes, Mad Libs with a Cape, an embarrassment of music cues (how’s Ye treating you these days?) with the power of a few good ideas and charisma a la Pierce Brosnan holding it together. They’re the Frankenstein’s Monster of films: you kinda feel for them, yet wish they didn’t exist. With a new creative now at the helm, this one felt like hopefully the end of, say, Phase 0. Don't let be misguided by critics: this is a highly mythological, epic and very enjoyable anti-hero action movie. It restores the Snyder verse, it follows Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel", "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", "Justice League" The Snyder Cut, "300" and "Shazam". Black Adam is ambiguous, so it's more unexpected and risk taking than most of MCU. Epic music, some LOTR music cues (thanks, New Line Cinema), some sharp dialogue and some deep thoughtfulness towards people's power.

Brosnan is great. Enjoyed The Rock as I usually do. Has the right presence for a superherol. Post-credit scene is awesome. While the villain isn't GREAT, they almost never are, so whatever. I know the action sequences are controversial but I think DC generally handles action between ridiculously powerful people with real impact. I enjoyed the action quite a bit. The plot is fine. Maybe if I didn't just love superhero movies this would be lower, but tbh, I didn't expect tons from this.
