BILLY JACK is an uneven, ham-fisted, and hypnotic slice of oddball '70s Americana, something that could only have been born in its precise time and place. It's an unforgettable piece of outsider art--the scribblings of sincere individuals who sympathize with the '60s counterculture while only partially understanding it. Best approached as a cultural document: aside from a lyrical opening credits sequence, its merits as a film are often questionable.

Craptastic sequel to The Born Losers. Other than the bit where Tom Laughlin calmly explains to one guy how he's going to kick him repeatedly in the face, this is a largely forgettable hippie love in with a couple of weak kung fu fights and bad tunes. Amazingly, this dopey series got two more movies.

When "half-breed" Billy Jack (all-white writer-director Laughlin) tells some interlopers, "On this reservation, *I'm* the law," it's tempting to read the film as an unintentional allegory of misguided white-liberal do-gooderism. Which it surely is to some degree (one savior scene in an ice cream parlor is...something), but its rage against racist white law, and vision of truly inclusive educational reform, are genuine (the Laughlins had their own such school). There is some strange power to it.

There're obviously a lot of non-actors acting badly on screen; some awful sub-community theater-level improv that's supposedly funny; & much of this feels like a bandaged together (w/ voice-overs) student film, but the embracing of horribly dated hippie ideology makes it as compelling as a car wreck. The vindictive pleasure the hero takes in beating up racists is also fun & cathartic, but the only part that's truly interesting is the last 20 minutes when 2 liberals discuss their differences.

"Billy Jack" explores the stark contrast between the privileged and unprivileged, the violent and nonviolent, and the caring versus uncaring. With elements of Kung Fu Revenge and Western genres, the film employs cultural themes to evoke strong emotions of shock, rage, and anger. While the acting is not good, and the script has imperfections, the film's message hits home in a heavy-handed yet impactful way. The film, shot in New Mexico, has recognizable backdrops and scenery, which added to my ov

Love the opening sequence with the horses (and "One Tin Soldier"), and so many others--like the city council meeting. I've often heard people decry this movie for its accused hypocrisy, but to me it's always been about how difficult (or actually, impossible) it is to be non-violent in a world of crazies. That's even what the Jean character seems to be saying right after her rape. One of my favorite movies of the 1970's.
