Funny, charming and a great feel-good movie. Packed with some excellent performances notably from Julie Walters.
Gritty and well observed characterisations marry well with a dynamic soundtrack and some stunning dance routines.
If you've seen the stage production you wont be disappointed with the big screen version.

The first half of this film belongs to Jamie Bell, unsurprisingly. The latter belongs to Gary Lewis as his father. The film rides the line of predictability a little closely a little too often, but it doesn't make you wait long between moments that'll wrestle a grin out of you. Bonafide crowdpleaser.

maybe overdoes the bleakness a bit (the piano chopping at christmas while billy watches on is almost funny at this point) but if you don't so much as shed a tear at the final scene then you're made of stone

Dunno if it's the Britishness, poor filmmaking, or just me, but there are a lot of unnatural editing and dialogue choices. Hard to get a grasp on characters until the second half.

Carefully contrived crowd-pleaser is predictable to a fault (with not a moment where you can't hear the gears turning), but Hall's screenplay is nimble enough to give new spins on old tropes (the "turnaround of the disapproving parent" arc is executed particularly well). You really can't go wrong with this sort of underdog story; Bell is a charmingly unpolished lead and Walters makes the most of an underwritten supporting bit. Neither the best or worst of its type, but still entertaining.

A predictable and formulaic feel-good Hollywood film, but a well-made one at that. The characters are well-developed, making Billy a flawed, but completely relatable hero; as is its world, with its sociopolitical backdrop and commentary giving the film a level of depth that elevates it above mediocrity. And the dancing! The dancing is just so exuberant and joyful that its hard not to also feel the same "electricity" that Billy does when he dances.

It has all the contents of a great movie. It has hilarious and deep moments which happen in a tough background; family problems, lack of money, self discovering, oppression and consequences. The movie reflects innate talent and passion. An open minded perpective against an old- fashioned ideology of what a boy "must do"

Daldry's debut is a schematic, obtuse yet moving piece of ballet drama. Most of the time, it feels like a visually attractive, but poorly scripted alegory of UK's rough days under Thatcher's administration. In the second half, the director shows the weakness that would ruin some of his following films: an intense desire to make the audiences burst into tears.

I wasn't sure what to expect with Billy Elliot, but I got out of it more than I had hoped for. It was a charming film, full of emotional highs and lows, brought out by some excellent acting. It's far funnier than I thought it would be, and these comedic moments help drive home the emotional depth the rest of the film has. It's an inspiring story of an 11-year-old child and his love of dance, one that will leave you feeling good about life.

(27-12-'10) Quite a moving drama about a young boy stumbling upon a ballet class which fascinates him much more than the boxing lessons his dad made him follow. But ballet is frowned upon in the mining community his family lives in... Wonderful performances of especially the boy and his father.

A moving story of a coal mining community faced with hard times during a worker's strike. The focus is on one family's individual struggles. Father and eldest son are out of work, striking for higher wages and the youngest son is doing his best to take care of his declining grandmother and hide his love of dance from those who don't think ballet is for boys. The music is great and the film stresses that you don't have to be gay to enjoy dancing; but if someone does happen to be gay, its ok.

By-the-numbers feel-good movie. The concluding moment makes clear that the filmmakers were sure of one thing: no way did they want to even consider showing any actual ballet throughout the movie (a decision that was not to the film's benefit). Overall, suffered from plot implausibilities (e.g., suddenly a tap expert), underdeveloped relationships (e.g., between Billy and the dance teacher's daughter), was rather sketchy, and was overly schmaltzy and predictable. A missed opportunity.
