Big rhymes with pig, as in Babe: A Pig in the City. City rhymes with pretty, as in Pretty in Pink. Pink rhymes with think, as in Don't Think Twice. Twice rhymes with nice, as in The Nice Guys. Guys rhymes with eyes, as in Big Eyes. Here is my review of this movie and a critique of my own review for it: That was an exercise.

A lot like a Keane painting in its own right - kitschy, formulaic, unrealistic... but I still liked it better than most of Tim Burton's post-millennial output. The writers seem to get the issue of Margaret's initial compliance under the circumstances of a closed-minded and sexist 1950s American society, and for its utter lack of subtlety and depth, the film still drives its points with a certain elegance and dignity. The acting is fine, save for Waltz' distractingly inexplicable accent.

Adams and Waltz give great performances, but the script never fully lives up to the effort they're putting in. It's nice to see more of the Burton who made Big Fish rather than the one who made Alice in Wonderland, but it still all feels a bit dull. Danny Elfman's score is shockingly unrecognizable, which was a nice surprise, even if it seems he's mostly aping Thomas Newman's score for American Beauty.

The true story behind this film is really good and interesting, but I'm not sure Burton was the right fit. His aesthetic is fine and works for the themes of the film, but his need to be melodramatic and arch at points really hinders it. The script is a little pandering, too. But apart from that, it was pretty good. It looked nice and colourful. Adams and Waltz were both great in their own ways. But the real reason to watch it is the great story about this artist, and art in general.

The concept seemed good, but it turned out that the trailer was grossly overselling the thriller aspects of this film. What I expected to be like Fatal Attraction with oils and turpentine, turned out as a watery paint-by-numbers Lifetime TV-movie. Adams and Waltz are both great actors but this screenplay was done being interesting after the first act, and gave them nothing more to work with. Tim Burton seems to be turning rather mediocre in his old age.

Fun, understated dramedy from Tim Burton, who is back in much subtler, more understated form than the caricature of himself he has become with his ill-fated string of "reimaginings." Amy Adams was robbed of an Academy Award nomination for her performance here, as she really manages to carry the movie. Christoph Waltz is definitely fun here too, having a lot of fun himself as the large ham, but it's Adams' movie and she owns it.

Burton's always been very mannered and formal at heart and this is the proof: it may look like a John Waters movie but it has a fundamentally conservative, almost naive view of art (and the creation of art). Waltz gets a lot of mileage out of his inherent smug creepiness, playing the lead charlatan like he was auditioning for Beetlejuice Goes To Hawaii.

This was Burton? Waltz is wonderful, but the decision to make Adams so meek and quiet makes her practically invisible. Adams did a great job, but there isn't much interest in the character. The decision to use a narrator to frame the story is curious, since it's only inclusion is to guide viewers along that can't keep up with the fast and furious plot, I guess. Ideas, such as being a housewife in the sixties, and art's value, are touched on, but are not fully developed.

Has all the subtlety of a cartoon. The whole thing made me cringe. Adams was pretty good, despite being hampered by a piss poor script. Waltz doesn't fare so well. This is really bad.

Is it brilliant or coincidentally fitting that Burton's film about a divisive subject that some argue is the degradation of art is told in a completely by-the-numbers fashion? We're talking about one of the most visually compelling directors out there, and while the palette is bright and colorful, it's an uninspired, shallowly-told story that kept me at an emotional factor of zero throughout its runtime. Waltz and Adams are great, and none of this is particularly BAD... but it's kind of meh.

Kind of perfect for a late period Burton. He's never going to go full out and make greats like Mars Attacks! again (I would love if he did), but this is weird and misanthropic enough to be a fit in his filmography while still coming across as a mainstream drama like a lot of his best work.

Big Eyes is a very entertaining Bio-Pic. A return to a style long left behind by Tim Burton from his Ed Wood days. The visual style is still unique but far more subtle than his previous work. Along with the performances of Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz carrying weight. The film is slow and uninteresting near the beginning but picks up and delivers a fine drama by the end.

Big Eyes mostly does its unique story justice. The performances of Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz are very good even if they seem to be on slightly different pages at times. The direction from Burton is excellent, especially with his use of a very vivid color pallette (something you won't see from him every day). However, the writing is wooden at times, and some scenes get too melodramatic to be completely effective. Nevertheless, this is a very beautiful and intriguing film to watch.

With such fascinating source material, you would think this would have been more interesting. Instead, Burton creates a familiar, "this happens and then this happens and then this" film that is, ultimately, boring. Amy Adams is great while Waltz is a little too Waltzy. You know what I mean.

It's a really good average movie. Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz are both great in their roles, but the story is rather predictable and by the numbers. It doesn't even seem to have Tim Burton's magic touch (bar the colours) and for all the creepiness of the pictures, that side of it is never really explored.

Subdued for a Burton movie. Like the paintings, this is simple and more than a bit sentimental, but very open for whatever emotions you put into it. Basically what you think about this movie, is a reflection not of the movie itself, but of what you yourself bring to the viewing.

This is definitely one of those artsy flicks. I really like any movie about artists or painting, and this was no exception. This is the crazy story of an artist from the 1950's who made it big, but had all her credit stolen from her conniving husband. Christoph Waltz plays the husband and he does a great job of being totally greasy and we aren't talking oil painting-greasy either. Amy Adams plays the poor artist who is immensely talented but receives no credit for her work...

Burton/Alexander/Karaszewski worked miracles before with Ed Wood, but this film is neither as good as their glorious tribute to celluloid dreaming or the subsequent biopics they wrote in the ensuing years. Burton's affinity for Keane is obvious: they are both pop artists with a dark childlike sensibility whose work is often dismissed by the establishment as kitsch. But it's a safe prestige pic that refuses to explore the questions it raises about gender and art with sufficient depth.

Big Eyes is something of a different offering from Tim Burton, who traditionally you wouldn't associate with this kind of project. And although I'm not entirely convinced that Tim Burton was the right choice to direct, I still enjoyed this film. The story itself serves as a really interesting premise and the performances of Amy Adams & Christoph Waltz do the true story justice. Sadly the lacklustre writing and melodramatic moments tarnish what could have been a much more impactful experience.

Reeks of midday movie schlock. Waltz was a caricature & Schwartzman, even more-so. Very safe from Burton with the only glint of a sharp edge coming when Waltz mutters about "taking down UNICEF". I suppose it was light on its toes as it seems to be a TB pet project & Keane would see the finished product, almost like it was pandering to her sensibilities.

If it weren't for the very interesting story, I don't think this would've been a decent film. The acting was really good and I liked the painting style cinematography with oversaturated colours and wide frames. But it just isn't a too memorable film apart from the story.

The fact that this is a true story makes this interesting, and the two leads are good at being entertaining, but it doesn't feel real. Which isn't necessarily a problem, but in this case that void isn't really filled with anything wondrous, impressive or engaging enough to make up for the fact that you can see the film going through its beats rather methodically and at times a bit tediously. It's at least well done enough that I didn't mind, though.

As someone who has taken a large step back on Burton in these last few years I was delighted to find this film quite enjoyable. Unfortunately for him it was probably because you wouldn't know he directed it by the product that was on the screen. There were only a few bits that felt Burton-esque and they fit well with the story and ended up being a pleasant addition. Story and acting were solid, Waltz was particularly fun at times. It's not going to blow anyone away but it's a fun biopic to watch

This looked promising as a decent drama from Burton, mostly because I'd rather him follow his own niche interests rather than Disney hack work, but I don't think he's well equipped to handle a nuanced bio-drama. The campy tone and weak script don't do the story justice, and although the ever-reliable Adams does her best, Walter Keane is a ridiculous caricature and Waltz's hamminess does his thinly-drawn character no favours. Not so much a return to form as a disappointing effort at one.

"Big Eyes" defines contrivance -the script seems designed to guide any seven-year old safely through plot points. Adams is solid, Waltz reveals that he's pretty much a one-note actor (his Waldaisms become nearly hilarious especially during a pyromaniac fit) and Burton remains invisible, save perhaps for his glossy San Francisco. Or perhaps the film's jabs at lowest-common-denominator art passing off as great are his quiet protest for being stuck with something so formulaic?

Likely Tim Burton's most grounded film to date, the story of painter Margaret Keane (Amy Adams), whose infamous depictions of big-eyed waifs were enormously successful in the 50s and 60s--and were believed to be work of her scheming husband, Walter (Christoph Waltz). As a whole, it has the feel of compromise; the reasons for Margaret's complicity in the ruse are told but never effectively shown, and the film only intermittently has real directorial flair. Still entertaining, with good acting.

A major disappointment with a lackluster script and Waltz's first major stumble. With Burton, an excellent cast and a loads of potential for a plot, it just sort of lays there. Even Amy Adams, though putting out her usual exceptional performance, was showing on the heavy side again. Hard to believe that was her in "American Hustle" and "Her".

Big Eyes is a weird movie, but not for the reason you expect given that its director is Tim Burton. Its plot is odd on its own, but the way it was treated was also strange. The two leads don't take the same type of direction in their acting, our director can't seem to restrain himself from laughing at the whole situation, and there's an unfortunate lack of depth to everything that happens. It's worth seeing, as it's quite enjoyable, but it has significant issues that are difficult to overlook.
