With Asimov (yes, Isaac fucking Asimov!) as the writer, you'd expect a story in similar mold of '2001: A Space Odyssey', retreating Dickian themes of 'being human'. But no. This Disneyficated slob is all: Robot treated nice! Aaah! Robot treated bad! Buhuu! Also the protagonist is virtually without palpable challenge: 'Can't be human without a heart? Well thank God I invented the human heartinizer-thingy!' Oh and James Horner: We heard you the first time. Stop ripping off Braveheart.

I'm not sure why this film gets so bad reviews. It's sentimental as hell and all that Columbus' usual mediocreness stand for. But, hey how many movies have you seen that attempts to picture what it is to have eternal life and bothers to go for multiple lifespans? For that sole reason it deserves an apploud.

I thought it was actually quite a touching story. Robin Williams, Oliver Platt and Sam Neill, whom I found particularly impressive, are all great. Admittedly some of the "futuristic" sets and robots look hokey but if you don't mind that then I think you'd really enjoy this movie.

Slathered in 90's schmaltz, and in that vein you could pick any of the Star Trek: Next Gen episodes about Data and find a better version of the A.I. becoming human story. The biggest flaw is that Robin Williams isn't onscreen until the last 45 minutes and the robot before that is a bargain-bin Metropolis model that just doesn't work. The long timeline is a neat idea that provokes some interesting future set design. I think someone like David Lowery could do a lot more with the concept.

I'm always tempted to bump a Williams sob-fest a little higher for sentimental reasons, but it's a shame that this long and sticky saga didn't find its way into a tougher pair of hands - raises some interesting philosophical questions (echoes of A.I.) but you can feel the narrative being forced into a sentimental framework, making the final stretch the most agonising when it should be the most intriguing. Williams and Neill stand out, and both do their best to bring some edge to proceedings.

Always good to see Embeth Davidtz in stuff. It's definitely the most simplified, cheesiest possible version of this kind of story. Which is not surprising, seeing as Chris Columbus directed this. Like reading the picture book version of a great novel. A pretty profound picture book, though, considering the last 15 minutes. Robin Williams is brilliant, as you'd expect.

I remember as a kid, all of Robin Williams' 90's sleep-inducing-gimmick dramas were marketed as comedies with 2 deleted funny scenes thrown into the trailer to make you think so, and it worked. And they got me every time. I really wanted to see this when I was 7 or 8, I don't know why, but then when I did, I remember it being depressing, but not enough to keep me awake, just like Patch Adams and whetever else he did like that. So I'm basing this review and score on that experience.

This remained surprisingly faithful to the short story. The sappy music made me want to kill myself, but this movie wasn't all that bad. A lot of the romance stuff was cringe-worthy, and they managed to violate the first law of robotics in the final scene, but otherwise not all that bad.

A movie with such massive scope and important concepts deserved to be great. Unfortunately it is held back by a lot of unfunny jokes and by falling on the wrong side of the line between heartwarming and corny. Also, do they have to give Asimov writing credit? He was dead, and doesn't deserve the blame for how this turned out.

It has some interesting ideas, but my general disdain for the film can be summed up with "HEY! YOU AND ME? WE'RE THE SAAAAAAME. LETS GET LOCO, ROBO!!" The robots in this movie... There aren't enough facepalms in the world to express how embarrassing they are. Were plastic suits really the best we could do in 1999? Good cast, but Williams is annoying. The movie's kinda boring too, but it's directed by Chris Columbus so that's to be expected. Blech.

I'd had a positive review up because I'd been relying on childhood memories, but as an adult, holy crap is this Bad. A story about a robot learning to be human that's completely uncurious about what it's like to be a robot, what it means to be human, and what the inner life of our main character is actually like. Apparently, being human means fucking and dying and not much else. And why would you get Robin Williams if you're making him play sedate and non-emotive? Bland and meaningless.

I can't say I ultimately liked it It ends up leaning much too far into less interesting ideas and the quest to give Robin Williams-bot a fully functioning penis. It ends up being an overly sentimental version of the least interesting aspects of Data on ST:TNG, and the last half starts to drag interminably.

Oversimplifies in a lot of ways to tell the audience what they think should be- fact is a robot that goes through this journey would not need to be externally validated as a human being, so it doesn't add up to me.

I wanted to like this because there are some interesting ideas involved. The problem is that the run-time is excessive and those ideas are often lost in the story and completely inappropriate comedic beats. If you could edit out the comedic aspects and trim the run-time, you might have something great.

This film made a lot of odd choices, but what I have the hardest time wrapping my mind around is the idea that a robot would be built in Robin William's dimensions. The fact that the robot then endeavors to become a human Robin Williams is bizarre too. Nothing against the guy, but if I had a choice I'm not sure I'd choose that. All that aside, turning into some silly melodramatic love story that is poorly assembled at best is really what this film suffers from. D+

Sci-fi/comedy/drama for the family which builds up nicely before taking an overlong journey into Pinocchio territory. The (initially distracting) leaps in time should allow lots of story to be crammed in, but the two hours still manage to feel a bit empty, even considering the more poignant final scenes. Perhaps when I'm in my 70s and single I'm gonna search out the fit girl I remember from uni and see if she's got a doppelganger granddaughter to stalk too.

What a strange movie to try to categorize. Bicentennial Man seems like a Sci-Fi movie at times and a drama at others. In many ways, Bicentennial Man is hit or miss. Robin Williams and Embeth Davidtz are terrific, but the script itself really has trouble figuring out what movie this is going to be. Still, but there's enough here to make it worth a viewing, as long as you don't mind overly sappy movies.
