Believe it - once upon a time, the man we know as Dr. Dolittle, The Nutty Professor, Pluto Nash, and Norbit was the HEIGHT OF COOL. Bruckheimer, Brest, and Murphy absolutely knew what they were doing here: it's incredibly easy to watch, the action and comedy go down smooth as a milkshake, the interplay between the characters (especially Murphy and Reinhold) has become cop movie standard ever since, and you've gotta love that score. 80s-tastic.

From the era when Eddie Murphy was at his madcap best, and playing one of his best parts, this is an extermely enjoyable and entertaining film. The humour is excellent and the film is very well paced, meaning that there is never really a dull moment. Beverly Hills Cop is full of charm, but demands not to be taken seriously to be fully enjoyed, even if it just about stays on the side of slightly plausible. It's strange seeing Murphy in an action scene, but it works surprisingly well. Very good.

Despite the utter garbage he's been in lately Eddie Murphy used to be in some really good and entertaining movies. This is most certainly one of them. It's not a superb mastery of anything really but this movie is just downright entertaining as Eddie Murphy plays a colourful (not racist), charming but crazy renegade cop in a town of complete by-the-numbers cops.

I don't remember anything very specific about this movie, but I do remember thinking it was quite entertaining. The "wacky, street-wise cop" premise has become an awful cliché at this point, but this, I suppose, was one of the first of its kind.

Hilarious and rather underrated from the scores I see here on Criticker. What do people want from this film? It's just about the funniest and best achievement of Eddie Murphy (that I've seen, anyway), and anyone who doesn't enjoy this just.. Takes things too seriously. Good film.

This script went through every writer in Hollywood, and it's a perfect example of corporate moviemaking. However, this was made back in the days when Eddie was still funny, so he more or less singlehandedly puts it over. It helps enormously that he is smart enough to be generous with his supporting cast

Murphy and company are great, the bouncy score sets the tone perfectly, and the screenplay is pure precision. Extremely well made, and wildly entertaining. Oh, and as a fun little bonus John Ashton (Sgt. Taggart) looks exactly like Gus Johnson (or vice versa).

A definite 80s classic and proof that a synthesizer score can actually rock. Although Eddie Murphy shines in this hilarious tale of the urban, fast talking cop facing off against Beverly Hills spoiled rich power players, the underlying story of a ghetto kid avenging the death of a trusted childhood friend really makes it fly. Bronson Pinchot steals the movie as "Serge."

It's funny ... this is a very entertaining film that, in pretty fundamental ways, isn't very good. The plot is ridiculously uninteresting. Steven Berkoff is smuggling drugs ... >snore< The dialogue isn't really all that funny on paper. What it has going for it is a really good cast that are firing on all cylinders here, and an insane amount of energy that carries you through the silly plot. Murphy was still early enough in his career that he actually could carry a film through charm alone.

Less of a comedy than I expected, but pretty neat. The dynamics between Axel and both the villain (in which Axel deliberately and repeatedly put himself in a position to take a shot in order to land one later on) and his Beverly Hills coworkers (where they clearly don't see eye to eye and are even antagonists to begin with, yet all begin to see the method to his madness even if they don't agree with it) work well, and I quite liked his lackeys.

As a star vehicle for Eddie Murphy, B.H.C completely delivers. As a film judged on its own merits, however, it's far less impressive. The direction is pedestrian and the story is cliched. Brest relied on the considerable improvisational skills of his cast to elevate the material, and it works to a point, but take away Murphy's charisma and the iconic electronic score and there isn't much there. It's certainly entertaining, but it's no classic. No wonder Paramount keeps delaying the 4th one.

A soft 80s policier. Amusing, not funny. Not one novel or interesting thing happening plot-wise. Yet there's Murphy, giving a great characterization - smooth, street-wise, chill, kinda sweet. This sort of role has become much more aggressive in the decades since. Similarly, I also appreciated the static direction somewhat.

Fine action/comedy is energised (and made memorable) by Murphy's iconic, charismatic performance, and a loosely structured story and screenplay which provide the perfect opportunity for its star to riff to his heart's content. Perfectly pitched supporting performances help tremendously (especially Cox and Reinhold), and while the ultimate resolution is never in doubt, Murphy keeps things fresh and unpredictable.

Beverley Hills Cop is one of the most iconic and nostalgic films of the 80's and it has the perfect mix of both comedy and action. Eddie Murphy is perfectly cast and he gives one of his most hilarious, charismatic and quotable performances as Axel Foley. Judge Reinhold in particular & John Ashton offer good support also. It's bizarre to think that Sylvester Stallone was originally inline to star in this film. But recasting him with Eddie Murphy was a stroke of genius and it sill entertains.

What happened to Eddie Murphy? He was at the top of his game in the 80's. This movie is a great representation of what a good 80's action cop movie. It has comedy, action, a little bit of drama, and dated racist, sexist, homophobic humor. I really like this movie, just like most of Eddie Murphy's early work. I have seen this movie at least 15 times, but each time I watch it it is like putting on an old t-shirt - it just fits right and it's always gonna feel good.

Eddie Murphy ties this film together excellently, playing a loose-cannon stereotype against by-the-book stereotypes in a basic murder-mystery plot. It does however have great action sequences, built on good characterization, and a lot of nice little character moments and improvised comedy. Sometimes it feels a little outdated but never enough to ruin the picture. The famous score is over-used and the baddie could have got more screen time, but it's a lot of fun and very well made.

Unambitious, but that's ok. It succeeds at nearly everything it sets out to accomplish: it's funny without resorting to crass humor as too many similar movies would do nowdays, it's entertaining without trying too hard to be, and features Eddie Murphy at the top of his comedic powers. Maybe it's because the buddy cop movie recipe has been tweaked for maximum laughs and explosions since 1984, but I almost felt like nothing happened in this. Murphy is charismatic, Judge stands around looking conflicted and hesitant, that song plays over and over, and that's about it. Watching this for the first time in a couple of decades, it’s definitely not as good as I remembered. In fact it feels like a pretty average mid-80s movie, particularly the flimsy smuggling plot and the silly mansion shootout at the end.
