I would also change my tune on adultery after being balls-deep in Olivia Wilde! Is there anyone who wouldn't? I can't get over the Pauly Shore x Dana Carvey vibe that I get off of Sam Rockwell. Kinda takes me out of some scenes, but that's my own fault. It's a little off the beaten path tonally, which I always tend to like, and at the end of the day I was entertained. Some things are contrived, simple, convenient, stereotypical, or "could have been done better", but, I definitely enjoyed it.

Enjoyable, though I wish to see both Sam and Olivia in way better movies than this one.

i don't know if the message "become a better person by consuming a shitload of various drugs" has much public appeal, but i don't think i would've acted any differently in doug's situation. the whole plot with his kid is awfully contrived, though. of course there's the obligatory swing of the moral club in the end, but it's quite neglectable. points for sam rockwell, he uplifts every movie, although this is far from his best. also olivia wilde is one tempting piece of you know what. it's ass.

Better Living Through Chemistry is uncompelling, uninteresting, and un-something-else. It's a mix-and-match of genres but comes across as too hollow to make any portion of it particularly worth seeing. That can happen to first-time writers and directors, which is exactly what the writing/directing team of Geoff Moore and David Posamentier are. They have a strong cast who look lost and bored, and a story that's not particularly compelling or sure of itself.

The film starts slow and uses narration as a prop but picks up as the drugs start to flow.

A middle aged male fantasy. The protagonist cheats on his wife, beats his bullies, wins his son's respect and gets the best of his horrible father in law with zero consequences.

A good screenplay and a great performance from Rockwell allow you to connect with his character and enjoy the fun, cathartic story that unfolds over 90 minutes. Fonda's narration seemed out of place, and solely as a device for heavy-handed exposition, it is. Nevertheless, the cast and their chemistry make the film enjoyable enough.

A fairly mundane story which doesn't follow through on many of its ideas is thankfully spiced up by a glamorous cast and subtle sense of humour. Despite the excellent noir potential of an easily corruptible average Joe, a stunning femme fatale and a nosy cop, the writers almost deliberately avoid this route. The everyday situational dramedy that takes its place is a little flaccid, but there's pleasure to be found in watching Wilde, Rockwell and Monaghan bitch it out a little. Halfway there.

mediocre films that rely on a narrator to prop them up & tell us what's happening or why someone does x,y,z get on my nerves. And this is one of them

Had a couple decent laughs, but ultimately was just bland. The whole ending was about how our protagonist Doug made a change and won. Problem is, his win was utter milquetoast boring horseshit. Also, having worked as a pharmacy technician I strongly sympathized with Doug's unhappiness in his job and also have to point out that his obvious drug pilfering would have landed him in jail. No patsy would have been able to save his sloppy thieving.

My life isn't better for seeing this film, but I did enjoy the cast's chemistry. Sam Rockwell and Olivia Wilde played off each other well. Michelle Monaghan played the perfect psycho wife that every man fears. The movie has a slow start but once the pills start flowing the film gets a lot more funny. Jane Fonda was an interesting narrator and had a weird and silly cameo right at the end...

A mostly weak and lazy first half eventually yields to a much better and funnier second half as the film decides to try being character-driven. As always, Rockwell is the brightest spot in a flawed film, and Wilde seems to have found a niche in small twisted comedies. Not sure what the point of Jane Fonda was, other to occasionally say ribald things during her totally unnecessary narration. Not a good film, but an enjoyable one if you stick around to the halfway mark.

It's like a benign, sitcommy version of that old Steve Martin NOVOCAINE movie. It dawdles, and nothing overly bad really happens despite lots of hints to the contrary, and it's not as naughty as it wants to be (or thinks it is, maybe). Moore and Posamentier are better directors than writers--this thing looks good, and the actors definitely help, but it's ultimately too airy to be all that memorable.
