Take me back to neighboring Östlund Island, where Dolly De Leon rules with an iron fist.

If you peel away most of the crap about Bergman (Hansen-Løve is too heavy-handed in this regard), the lame 'mystery' of what is real and what is fiction, and the monotonous interchanges between Roth and Krieps then you are effectively left with an insecure and horny Mia Wasikowska (to put it bluntly) that forms the kernel of a story that potentially says something meaningful about female love and desire. In other other words, a film more in the spirit of Bergman.

Seems fairly promising for quite a while, but fizzles out. Maybe I should have taken the stuff at the beginning about how many children Bergman had as a warning of superficiality to come.

Low-key, brilliant, put those two words in whichever order you wish. Yes, it's a love letter to Bergman the film maker and a critical look at the male genius myth at the same time, the impossibility of NOT (ab)using your personal life in your creativity, but what makes it so enjoyable is Hansen-Løve's light touch; the stakes are there, but it's not all passionate doom'n'gloom or Big Questions, just a series of small moments that are all the more important for it.

Viewed December 12, 2021.The spirit of Bergman, as both a filmmaking icon and a national hero, hangs over every moment of Bergman Island in surprisingly novel ways. Not exactly a revelatory film, but the understated performances, interesting concept and the scenic locations give you enough to chew on.

Low-key, playful romantic drama about the confusing and amusing nature of creation -- and, in a way, the very creation of our everyday lives. A couple retreats to Bergman island, each to their own process -- she's writing a script and kinda stuck, he's in the middle of a production and went there to exhibit one of his films and make some tours through Bergman's iconic places. The entire film should be Chris' movie, about a wedding at Faro, former lovers with more downs than ups meeting again.

The first 30m I thought something was at stake but it went young-adult "meta" and totally lacking depth. What a totally unsatisfying and uneventful movie, and since it's about someone having problems writing a movie it especially boggles the mind why this was greenlit.

Gezi turu. Fazla dramatik. Ama güzel doğa görüntüleriyle izletiyor. Filmin sonunda, kızım gelmiş. Iyyyyy Denizanası.

Since I'm not a big fan of slice-of-life films, I felt my attention start drifting away, much like the marriage of Chris and Tony. Then when it switched, I thought the second story might be more riveting. But when the two stories started to intertwine - well, that was a bit too much. The acting was fine and the setting was amazing, but it just didn't keep me interested. (I wondered if Chris' third ending would be the one she herself chose; thankfully it didn't end that way in front of the kid.)

I thought this was pretty neat, like a slightly more plot-driven version of something that Hong Sang-Soo might make. I should probably watch more Bergman films.

Acho que esse é o primeiro filme ficcional passado na Suécia que vejo que conta com música do ABBA. Rá! Na Mubi

Should have been the perfect film for me, seeing that I love Ingmar Bergman's movies, and there are quite some interesting stuff about the artist along the way. But the character's doesn't appeal that much to, nor does their stories.

I've read reviews that strive to place a rather rigid structure on this film and read a lot into it to connect both parts in definite ways. I disagree with this kind of rather straightforward reading of the film. I think there's a strong emotional logic to this film, but trying to trace that in more literal terms is misguided.

I confess that I skipped over the Mia Wasikowska/Anders Danielsen Lie parts.

This is quite a solid, thoughtful film, with a real holiday/escapist feel to it. I liked the main performances and I liked that its essentially a story within a story, with the lady telling her idea for a potential film, to her husband, who is a successful director. I liked that it has a laidback feel, almost like the TV series (or film, if your in the US and saw the theatrical version) of the 'The Trip' series with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. I enjoyed this and would certainly recommend it.

A dream-like meta-romance in in the setting of so many Bergman stories of similar ilk. Wasikowska and Krieps give very real performances in their fragile love of men who aren't interested enough. The poking at film geeks was great.

I like the setup, and the actors are pretty great. The end result is decent enough but sort of underwhelming.

A film stuck on an island, trying to find out what it wants to be. Though this isn't the only thing meta - there's a story within a story, reflecting back on the teller, intermingling narrative strands. I find it interesting to watch this intellectual work a day after The French Dispatch, where the topic was also storytelling per se. Hansen-Løve gives you the space to fill out what Anderson colors over. Some will prefer this ethereal approach, but I felt a bit like floating in empty space.

Pretty cool but definitely a bit too slight. It felt like a lot of interesting plot points got left behind, although I did like the turn it took in the second half. Great performances, especially from Krieps. The “fuck Bergman” scene was funny, a whole theatre of Bergman fans laughing like “well…..yeah”
