Imagine Lemmy from motorhead riding a dinosaur, surrounded by naked women, singing 'Ace of spades', chopping of heads with his axe which is also a bass guitar, and his sideburns on fire. This is what Beowulf is like.

It's ambitious, I'll give it that. Seeks to tackle big themes like pride, ambition, redemption, and the consequences of sin, but ends up focusing more on the (admittedly impressive) visuals. Good, but not as great as it could have been.

The problem with Beowulf is that it can't decide it's own tone. Is it trying to embrace the Beowulf over-the-top legend or trying to debunk the legend and make it real? It appears to try and do both but it just doesn't work. Beowulf asks his wife, and the viewer, to think of him "as a man, not a king or hero," minutes before he's about to fight a 300' dragon. It's just such a clash of tone. The animation is sometimes marvelous, sometimes not (eg. horses galloping). All in all it's a mixed bag.

This is a big, dumb action flick, but it works very well. It has just enough depth and critical revision to keep it interesting throughout and the 3D animation is very good, often stunning. And as nitpicky as I can be about faithfulness of adaptations, the changes here are either necessary (b/c of the fragmented nature of the poem) or interesting subversions that effectively underscore the commentary on fame, appearances vs. reality, and other themes found in the original.

As a film alone, Beowulf accomplishes the feat of being an above average fantasy flick that never feels quite as epic as it should be. The story changes to the poem, however, feel quite welcome and add a depth that probably wouldn't exist in a straight adaptation. As an action ride in digital 3D IMAX, Beowulf provides a revolutionary experience. The 3D is utilized in every shot, and the film completely engrosses the viewer in its world. Unlike previous 3D experiences, Beowulf's is no gimmick.

A passable, but highly inaccurate telling of the classic tale. Many of the classic details are preserved, but in the end it veers into average action movie territory. That said, the action's great, and the testosterone never stops. And Beowulf likes to say his name. Alot. Seriously, there's a scene where he breaks through a monster's eye and all he says is "Beowulf!!!" Now THAT is dialogue! Not GOOD dialogue, but it's dialogue.

Interesting technique and immersive fantastic world creation makes this movie more than watchable. Other than that this 'old-brave-strong-men' concept is getting dull really fast after 300. The action chareography was good non the less. A decent movie, especially if you are lucky to view it in a 3D IMAX theater.

There were some things I liked, some things I didn't. The differences between this one and the original epic poem were interesting but enough to make something else entirely new and original. Didn't like so much the gratuitous violence, gratuitous lewdness, gratuitous Angalina Jolie ... seemed like major changes to the story were to accomodate her. Most of my score goes to the amusing throught that countless lazy highschoolers will watch this instead of read, only to fail their tests. HA HA HA!!

The animation is interesting and it features a good cast, with Gleeson surprisingly delivering the best performance. However, it all plays out too much like a feature-length high-quality CGI video game cutscene, which really isn't a good thing. In addition, the actors feel out of place with the somewhat wooden animation of the humans. The story is fairly epic and it's visually pleasing enough at times, so I'm sure theres something here for some people. It just didn't cut it for me though.

Like someone else said: It looks like a computer game. I wonder why they didn't make this in the LOTR style with live actors. The budget would be insane, but this is a timeless epic story that would deserve such a treatment. Somehow this animated style didn't allow me to care about the characters, so it just turned into eye-candy. The game God of War is better than this movie - and YOU get to be in it.

It's like watching a computer-game that somebody else is playing. In the beginning it's very annyoing, but after a while the story and action got to me and I started liking the movie. But I don't hope this is the future of movies, the digital characters still lack something, especially when they use well known-actors like Hopkins and Jolie. I rather see them acting in a 'real' movie. The wooden animation doesn't do them justice.

Would one have intercourse with Jolie shaped demon in a harsh way? That is a mighty dillema only the mightiest of men have to resolve..erm and his father...I can think of one more Troian too...ok, it is getting crowded here. As for the movie, it is moderately better than 300, more talkative, as gory. The technique is yet to be perfected, but got better after all. With some more investment from audiences who are once again sucker for sword&sandal, it has some potential.

While I did not see this in 3D, I was still very impressed by the CG. There were a few times where it was a little flawed, but overall it was well done considering the relative newness of the technology. I consider the story to be a worthy interpretation of the original. While it changes quite a bit, I believe they kept the feeling of the story intact. They did add flaws to Beowulf and Hrothgar, but this adds depth to characters that would have otherwise come across as flat on the big screen.

I liked the story quite a bit, but by god did this looked awful. I'm tempted to say that this film was simply made too soon, that the animation technology has improved a lot since then. But considering that this came out the same year than Ratatouille and that, 15 years later, Zemeckis made the hideous Pinocchio remake, I'm not so sure. I also would like to point out that Zemeckis casted his own wife as the maiden who seduces a soldier with her cleavage. Make of this information what you will.

This is a straight up ugly film. The animation style is good for the sceneries and the creatures (Grendel stands out as original and disgusting) but makes the people look like uninterested, melting clay figures. On top of that the characters are very 1-D, though the voices are great, story is drawn out and descends into randomly depressing, and music is forgettable. I'm starting to think the story of Beowulf is not meant for a film adaptation.

Doesn't quite have the panache when it comes to the trademark-Zemeckis motion-capture animation that he'd reach with A Christmas Carol, but still gives way to leading-edge visuals, a deeply consuming atmosphere created by immensely meticulous art direction and unheard-of set pieces of horror and action for a 3D animated blockbuster. Two fine writers who specialize in dark stuff adapt the ancient story in a straightforward, no-nonsense way that skirts the line between for-kids and not-for-kids.

The first half looks incredibly violent, cool and catchy, but then Zemeckis/Gaiman/Avary get lost in typical distractions of sword & sworcery flicks (characters that have important things to do, but actually go nowhere and suddenly make last-minute decisions). That is: a bipolar animation, that could've been great, but seems enjoyable only as a compilation of visually impressive motion capture scenes.

They did about as good a job as they could with the Beowulf story, but it wasn't anything incredibly interesting to begin with. Monster kills a bunch of men, Beowulf kills the monster. Copy and paste for the second story. My biggest complaint is the unnecessary changes they made, like reducing Wiglaf's role, but still keeping him in the movie for some reason. Beowulf is a film that exists so that it can show how far we've come in motion capture technology. It's like a tech demo that has a plot, and in that regard, it succeeds in showing us that we still have a long way to go. So thanks, Beowulf, for allowing me to know that motion capture technology isn't perfect, but needs to be close in order to not be a distracting gimmick. The rest of the film seems to have been an after-thought, and it's not worthy of your time.

The camera is really fun, although as the man from MIT pointed out, Zemeckis is pretty clueless in this regard and so mostly just does swooping and POV shots, but that's still nice to look at. Also, the fantastical elements, like Grendel and the dragon and stuff is all very impressive, and it is surprisingly frightening at times. Everything else is shit. 'Beowolf', apparently a chirpy Cockney lad who likes fighting and nudity, lands in Scandinavia to do some killing. And to be fair he does okay at it. Typically Zemeckis' CGI wavers between very good and really quite awful, and the script and storytelling is probably below average if I'm honest. Even so, despite some misgivings about how the epic poem's plot is put into film I ended up quite enjoying this. Mainly for Grendel, who was just awesome. The 3-D also ain't much, as it never is, but it does have one golden moment; Beowulf slicing open a sea-monster's neck, spraying blood "all over" the audience.
