Belphégor

1927
Crime, Mystery
Belphégor deals with a series of mysterious appearances by a masked-and-robed figure in the Louvre; a security guard is murdered, and a later police trap is foiled when the phantom--"Belphégor" (the name of a legendary demon)--uses knock-out gas. Journalist Jacques Bellegarde of "Le Petit Parisien" (the real-life newspaper which published the original story), investigates, and eventually discovers famous detective Chantecoq and his vivacious daughter Colette are also on the case.

By the late silent era France were still busting out quality serials. And while Belphégor doesn't have the following those legendary films of the teens it stars the actor that made Fantômas famous, René Navarre, for suspenseful detective story lasting 3 1/2 hours. Best thing is the cinematography. Very expressive when it wants to be! The story progresses well too, but does suffer a little from it's uneven pacing. Though I'm not complaining about the exciting scenes. Brought chills even!
