An OK adaptation, but its themes are too literary to translate well to film.

Whew, ambitious. There isn't really anything like Beloved our there. Demme was not the obvious choice for Toni Morrison's tale of guilt, magical realism, and slavery. The performances are big and the narrative is far from linear. Demme's colors and characteristic eye line are there, but there is a bit of a mess to keep this from something great.

Not an easy watch, for sure, but what a poignant depiction of pain and suffering in 1800s America haunted by slavery. Acting is not short of superb, and while it may seem evidently convoluted, its beautiful, often scary and emotionally resonant moments just mean the world -- the final dialogue between Sethe and Paul D, Beloved arriving at the house, Denver finding jobs and meeting Paul again on the streets, Sethe's story of how Denver was born.

I don't think Jonathan Demme was the right man for this movie. I get that he had just shepherded a major book to the screen with massive success, and this book's horror elements might gesture in the direction of "The Silence of the Lambs". I'm also sure that his deeply caring nature must have connected to this subject matter. But this film is so far from what he usually does and what he does well, that I can't really discern much of him here.

DVDRip HANDJOB.

Some books shouldn't be brought to film. Others just can't be done successfully. Beloved feels like it belongs in both categories. What makes Morrison's novel so amazing isn't just the story, but the richness and complexity of her writing. That element of literary structure simply cannot be recreated; In so doing, the audience looses a whole element of Beloved. They kept the main idea about the evils of slavery, but forgot all the details and aspects of the story that articulate it.

Just a mess. A bad idea from the start, I think. Jonathan Demme is one of my favorite directors, but he was just the wrong guy for this. The story is so strange and, well, stupid, that it takes a certain kind of talent to make the emotion work and Demme hasn't got it. Should have been directed by David Lynch.

Good premise but the on-screen effort is weak.

No, I don't believe Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey as dirt-poor sharecroppers at all. This movie was the beginning of the end for Jonathan Demme
