Belly of the Beast

Another chance for Seagal to explore and elaborate on the finer aspects of his acting craft: such as (but not limited to) "just standing there" "moving as gracefully as an arthritic silverback gorilla" and "acting only with the use of the neck". That said; Belly of The Beast still mimics the shape and form of a normal film, which at this point in Seagal's career should be considered a welcomed bonus.

"Mr. Seagal, you were a bit too quiet on the last take, we're going to have to do it again. Remember, your daughter has been kidnapped, you need passion." "No, I think it was good." "Well will you at least ADR it?" "No it was fine."

Seagal hits rock-bottom looking confused in the middle of badly directed shoot-outs surrounded by some of the worst perfomances in a "serious film" ever. Seagal have never looked less in shape. Belly of the Beast indeed...

Why do I allow myself to get suckered into giving these Steven Seagull movies a chance?

Belly of the Beast is as stupid as it gets by Seagal's standards. The title makes no sense but is appropriate as Seagal looks the most out of shape he ever has. Also the choreography is absolutely ridiculous and mocks Seagal's natural martial arts talents. In fight scenes he literally just waves at people and they fly across rooms in every direction. His face is never in shot during the fight scenes which asks the question is it actually Seagal and when he is on screen he looks a complete joke.

Trying to make an older, larger version of Seagal into an unstoppable, wire-assisted hero is difficult even for the director of A Chinese Ghost Story and Duel To The Death. In my version of the film's production, said director Ching Siu-Tung became bored by the dull, difficult to understand plot and halfway through added gender manipulation and a literal spiritual battle between good and evil. It helped a lot.

Horrible. Had hardly any of the lovable traits that you'd normally see in a Seagal movie.
