Film director Blasetti is looking for a little girl for his new movie. Along with other mothers, Maddelena takes her daugther to Cinecittà, hoping she'll be selected and become a star. She is ready to sacrifice anything for little Maria, even if her husband would prefer they save their little money for the rent, instead of paying teachers, hairdressers or bribes for her illusions. I’m taken aback by the complexity in characterization and emotion here. Beautiful storytelling and performance.

The horrors that are a ambitious mother living her life through her young little girl, pushing her to become a movie star. Anna Magnani was amazing. Takes us on such a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The screen test and the realization at the end where her focus changes to becoming a real mother were so heartfelt. The little girls fits her role perfectly. So perfect, in fact, that she never appears in another movie ever again, mirroring the character she played so well in Bellissima (1951).

The story and the performances are pretty good but it felt like work rather than play.

Magnani is superb (no living actress could play her role today) and the film is filled with wonderful details and situations. More subtle than its constant high-volume dialogue might lead you to believe.

mamma mia... those Italians, how noisy they are... what a great film and what a great actress Anna Magnani is!

É um bom filme, mas ainda prefiro a era mais aristocrática do Visconti.

having been put off from luchino for quite a long time by the leopard, i've come back to him with this one and it's far, far better. it follows an anxious and controlling woman trying to get her 5-year old daughter into acting; it's emotional, dramatic and funny. of course, the irony of films about actors struggling to make the big time is...well, that's pretty obvious i suppose.

This film contains one of the all time greatest marriage feuds with a powerhouse performance by Anna Magnani, one of my personal favourite movie mamas. A sometimes overly melodramatic and a bit contrived script is easily forgotten in a film so constantly brimming with life.

Anna Magnani gives an absolutely staggering performance (as usual). The final scenes are sublime.

It's a distinct experience when I watch an absolute masterpiece and that's how I know it; I find myself crying and laughing at the same time. Bellissima, despite the unassuming, intimate nature of its story, is at once a heartbreaking tragedy and a gutbusting comedy, and it achieves this through nothing but masterful realism. Magnani gives one of the finest performances I have ever seen as a terrible woman whom it is impossible not to relate to and love.
