Belle epoque

A live action harem film. Not enough of Maribel Verdu and barely any Penelope Cruz. Nice setting. The plot basically writes itself once the sisters are lined up. Fav scene: Manolo immediately figures out why Fernando "missed" the train.

Sex comedy with a bit of depth, but this kind of setting and premise is just begging for something much darker and with much more bite. A satire that skewers the setting and traditions and maybe the characters. The film hints at it, most notably with its religious angle, but otherwise it's content to be a silly a story about a guy's weird love trysts with some sisters. It's fun enough as that, but could have been more.

In Belle Epoque sex is nothing but an activity full of comic possibilities. It's erotic, but in a way that isn't nasty or violent; instead, it's playful and kindhearted. More movies ought to portray sex in this manner. The four daughters - pursued by Fernando's libido, the main character - are empowered and unafraid, and the romance is carefree and incredibly silly. Violeta's seduction of Fernando might be one of the most charming sex sequences I've seen on film.

A lighthearted and enjoyable sex farce that lacks satirical bite.

What would be a pretty dire sex comedy is rescued by some brilliant dialogue (need to understand the Spanish vernacular, subtitles get nowhere near it) and the seduction of Fernando by Violetta which is a standout scene in any film,

Enjoyable movie that I got a kick out of in Spanish class even though the teacher did not turn on the subtitles.
