YTS.

Very Godardian, both in style with its discontinuous editing, jump cuts and camera movements as in content with all the cinephile references and political discourse. It is at it best when it focuses on the more simple human forbidden love story. At it worst moments it feels pretentious and didactic, mostly in the political scenes. While some of that pretentiousness might be on purpose to mirror its protagonists, Francesco Barilli is too mediocre as an actor to get this across.

This is Bertolucci at his most cine-literate. The film is awash with cinematic flourishes, some of which are exciting and fresh, but some just seem like indulgent showing off. His political commentary is less scattershot and in-your-face than Godard, but still seems muddled at times. I also found the lead characters to be annoyingly manic. Overall, Bertolucci hits more than he misses and it's one of his most interesting works, although definitely flawed.
