Before and After

This film has a good story, but the ending is sad. The father did what was right, but the boy's mother destroyed the family. The boy did not kill anyone. It was an accident, in which he reacted in legitimate defense. He could have been the dead in that circumstance. It was not fair that boy and his father were arrested because of a useless prostitute girl.

Even out of the mouths of brilliant stars like Streep and Neeson, the scriptedness never stops going through my ears like a slow needle. There's something worth saying about the moody pastoral atmosphere and score, but it gets so lugubrious, self-serious and maudlin. Fortunately Alfred Molina shows up just before I'm ready to turn it off and gets me to stick around for another couple minutes.

A thought-provoking film, but marred by one or two melodramatic speeches, an underwhelming ending and a cast that's prestigious but doesn't really work. Still worth a watch though.
