So that's why they took Paul Atraides to a desert planet... I jest. It's a solid film. I feared that it would be Steve Carell Oscar baiting, but I got a crushingly honest look at drug addiction and its many victims instead. I loved Chalamet in 'Dune' but this performance elevated him to one of my favorite working actors. The soundtrack is noteworthy as well. Recommended.

A nauseating experience that will make you wish you were on drugs. Some mawkish moments initially (helped by some predictable post-rock tunes edited in too perfectly), though the film does reign it in somewhat. Once we realise the cyclical nature of Nic's recovery and relapse, the film becomes an endless and obvious slog, offering no new real insight into the lives of the addicted, though does situate us in the anxiety-ridden role of the dad -- if that sounds like a fun night to you, go see this

Safe, predictable, mainstream study of addiction; Carell and Chalamet are both superb and deserve a screenplay worthy of their performances; too mawkish and sentimental, with soundtrack choices almost laughably on-the-nose (on tenterhooks waiting for the title song to drop!). Perhaps by design, the film seems to lack dramatic power or impetus, instead focussing on the frustrating 'one step forward, two steps back' of recovery, but the screenplay buckles under these ambitions.

What feel like narrative missteps may be calculated ambiguity, or vice versa. The film is often frustrating, since here rehab doesn't offer the solution to addiction; nor personal shame; nor the unconditional love of a father for his Prodigal Son. It shows addiction as the event horizon of that void in each of us, a constant threat, infuriating because its pull is so great and so close and so unknown. This film is an uncomfortable conversation, not a satisfying answer, and that may be wise.

It apparently took 7 months to edit this film, and perhaps that was its issue. Nothing resonates emotionally, and it just becomes a huge slog to finish. They also make Carell into the perfect father, which takes away some of the conflict.

Some well-captured, sincere moments from a father-son arch, along with one's unexplained desires to distort reality, but struggles to broaden the spectrum of an important epidemic. Still affectionate with it's true story, but lacks something inventive that I would've found powerful.

Strangely obsessed with beauty and being culturally hip. I'm sure the beautiful kid isn't supposed to be really annoying - but he is. And that calculated soundtrack is awful.

Well acted and supposedly quite accurate. It’s just hard to sit through with Chalamet’s character being pretty unlikable, even if we understand where he’s coming from. Not to mention it’s a bit repetitive, as one might expect. Still worth seeing if it’s of interest.

The cyclical nature of Beautiful Boy leads it to be emotionally cold in an authentic manner, reminding the audience that stories like this do not have typical Hollywood endings but are a long, arduous process for those involved. A pair of great performances from Carrell and Chalamet saves the film from being one-note and bland in the constant pattern of recovery and relapse.

An authentic view of addiction and rehab. Everything feels fractured, the way the memories creep in; never felt disjointed because it was the intent. It's a little disorienting but that's purposeful. It's not like it was hard to follow. I actually love the ending because it was powerful in its simplicity and doesn't offer an easy answer, but instead focuses on support. Performances were great, emotional storytelling, sometimes the song choices felt a little strange but besides that, no problems.

Boring boy. Does retread upon retread which I get what addiction is but it doesn't make for great cinema - pacing makes a 2 hour film feel like double. Performance wise it's sound.

We've long been convinced of Steve Carell's authenticity and mastery of his chosen art form, but that fact is renewed and strengthened here. One can be forgiven if the ultimate message of the film gets lost, as it could be any number of things, both positive and negative. The bouncing narrative style is very much noticeable, and again, forgivable if it leans on you, but the movie operates much like the mind in that frustrating sense; rarely do memories work in sequence. A trying, but nice touch.

I think it'll be called harrowing by peopl who have no connection or proximity to addiction. Chalamet was okay and will get an oscar nod. Carrell, still not buying him as serious man. Needs to work out a few things. Music cues were laughably on the nose. Did like the ending tho.

It's hard to tell if the ultimately unsatisfying ending and limited scope of the story itself is the point of the film, or just that. It seems conflicted between telling a good story and offering an authentic experience of what addiction must feel like for the characters. Ultimately, it spends just as much time showing how addiction affects those around the addict, as much as the addict, himself. Yet, as gut-wrenching as it can be, do we really need this kind of story in 2018?

Liked this a fair bit more than I thought. I actually felt the drifting, fragmented storytelling worked well. Strangely being able to capture both the sentimental rush and frustrating despair that Carell's character goes through. It is a rather "nice" addiction film, which is a bit odd. And as cowfrappe mentioned the soundtrack is way too predictable and recognizable that it sort of takes you out of the movie.

The film is apparently based on both the father's and son's respective memoirs about his addiction, but I really only get the impression of the father's story. I think he's a well-meaning, caring man who I really dislike, and I think the story is too distorted by his impression of what happened.

The Chalamet does an exquisite portrayal of a descent into uncontrollable turbulence, and individual character moments are captured with tact and authenticity, even if it lacks the perfect and touching execution. We can still be moved without being moved to tears.

A beautifully tragic portrait of a promising youth's descent into addiction, and his family relationships - particularly the father-son bond - which go through hell without quite giving up. I feel like Chalamet out-acted Carrell on occasions which was the only uneven note in a brilliantly-written film which should have taken even more awards. Not an easy watch but not torture porn either.

Carell is brilliant here. But it's too bad the movie is so dependent on circular narrative and a total unnecessary detachment from its characters. Also, great songs to develop scenes seems so lazy. Either way an effective on how white privilege deals with crystal meth addiction of a kid destined to be great but failing big time.

This film was missing something. Perhaps it's the way it progressed, with its haphazard, non-linear-linear storytelling but the emotional "oomph" I was expecting was missing. Don't get me wrong, the story is heartbreaking and definitely a tough watch with what they go through, but it didn't have me weeping. I can say though that Timothee Chalamet was incredible in this film and is a major reason to consider watching this one.

The longest 2 hour film I've watched to date. It's like a selection of music videos interspersed with arguing. Acting is sublime, but the characters are unlikeable and whats more, this film likes spelling out the context for you. Wanted it to end an hour in, couldn't leave the cinema cos i'm British and didn't want to cause a disturbance in volume to fellow cinema-goers.

I didn't know going in that this was based on true events, but it made sense. It felt very personal and real. Lots of little touches really made the difference there, too. The film takes you on a emotional journey without feeling too manipulative, which I really liked. The cast was good all around. I think I enjoyed it in all the ways I was supposed to and I recommend it.

Oğlanımız ise saldım çayıra mevlam kayıra baskı yemeden anı yaşa tarzında eğitiliyor. Fakat oğlan anı fazla yaşayınca uyuşturucunun esiri oluyor. Some incredibly powerful scenes, that don't quite come together into an incredibly powerful movie. The pivotal father/son relationship is portrayed very convincingly. I was glued to the screen during every single scene between these two. A lot of scenes are a straight punch to the heart. They're well-made in every respect, and deliver on emotional intensity as well as character intrigue. But as a whole, I can't quite hold this movie together in my head.

This film didn't really click with me. I never had any empathy for Carell's two-dimensional character. The problem was with the writing, not the acting. It's a tad whitewashed, a tad morally fucked. It comes close to poignancy a few times, but never quite gets it. Lots of cheese, few crackers. Nevertheless, it is a fairly entertaining anti-meth film.
