In yet another film patterned on _The Seven Samurai_, a band of diverse heroes in outer space are assembled to defend a planet of peaceful colonists from an armada of aggressors. If the special effects look familiar, it is because you've the same space sequences recycled in other low budget SF films. (imdb)

Not good by any means, but still kind of fun. I mean, how bad can a movie be when it has a spaceship with tits?

I don't think it's quite justified to call it a "Star Wars" rip off, and this little guy shouldn't be dismissed so easily. The kooky imagination shown in this movie accomplishes exactly what it sets out to, it's a pretty wild and entertaining sci-fi flick coming from the beginning of the era where sci-fi wasn't just genre mumbo jumbo, but equally capable of raking in cash like any other. When you're not transfixed on James Cameron's special effects, your eyes might wander to a ship with balls.

Cold War drivel in which the A-Team's Hannibal teaches the peace-loving hippie drones of Akir that their only hope against a race of cold-blooded mutants is to put down their flowers, and pick up their sticks and fight. Many mention the unique ship design as a must-see; however, I barely noticed the scrotumobile for I couldn't take my eyes off of Richard Thomas's megamole. It drew me in like light into a black hole. 40 points for the door that used the Darth Vader breathing sound when it opened.

This Roger Corman produced scifi flick is essentially The Seven Samurai meets Star Wars, as John Boy Walton seeks out a group of space badasses to help protect his defenseless planet from an evil intergalactic overlord. This movie has a pretty light tone and a great B-cast, with a bunch of goofy dogfights between model space ships on strings. A good choice if you're in the mood for something kinda silly.

Fun 80's scifi which mixes Star Wars with Seven Samurai. It rips off a lot of elements directly, and adds certain exploitation flavor that is missing from the original. It's still more serious than it's Italian/Japanese counterparts and the models&FX by e.g. Jim Cameron have aged better than most. Still a bit of a missed opportunity; feels like it was either shortened in editing or the script had issues to begin with. It doesn't help that director Murakami handles the battle scenes in autopilot.

Probably the most successful of the first wave of Star Wars ripoffs, this Roger Corman production benefits from striking a good jocular tone and from an imaginative array of sci-fi characters. There's a genuine creativity in the various cultures portrayed and some real dramatic stakes near the end, which elevate this beyond most attempts at capitalizing on the trend.

The least enjoyable Corman's sci-fi rip-off I have seen to date. It's just boring. Spaceship that looks like boobs with huge guns attached to them was amusing for a few minutes, but then it was a battle to keep awake till it ended.

Hey, a Star Wars ripoff from Roger Corman. Robert Vaughn was in Man from U.N.C.L.E, which was a satirical Spy-Fi jam from 1960's TV. That show is never on! And it is like a million dollars on DVD, huh? That's what good movies do, they make you think of "pretty good" television shows their faded stars used to act in.

The hero spends much of the film quoting alien hippie-scripture to weasel his way out of having to do anything heroic. The love interest's father is creepily eager to pair his daughter off with the first handsome stranger he sees. The spaceship effects are pretty good, actually. The interiors and especially the Akir planet sets look a good twenty years out of date, not surprising considering it's a Roger Corman production. Nice music, though.

John Dykstra from star wars was approached to do the special effects for this and said it'd cost 2 million dollars! Roger Corman then BUILT a studio for half that, reused the special effects in dozens of other films AND leased the studio to John Carpenter for escape from New york! Genius! oh and the film's okay too

Among the things worth watching in Corman's space opera are the numerous miniature battles, some of those miniatures looking like scrotums, Richard Thomas's mole and Sybil Danning's (ahem) costuming. At the top of this list, however, is Robert Vaugn's "incredible" performance. I haven't seen that level of boredom on screen before. There are far worse Star War rip-offs than this.

very cheesy sci-fi in which a stupid young boy hops on to his scrotum shaped spaceship (which has a bitchy computer) and collects the worst costume fighters in the galaxy to help him save his planet...I wont give spoilers, guess the end:)

Better than the cheesy premise, costumes and sets would lead you to believe, but it's still not that good. For every compelling moment there are several just plain boring ones which makes the whole thing not very fun.

A fun movie in it's own right, but obviously a bit of an insult to Seven Samurai. Richard Thomas is very annoying as usual, but the cast is otherwise mostly solid. Director and ship designer were both sex obsessed, but designs were otherwise nicely alien.

Space fantasy gone so wrong. Above all else, the most insulting component is the awful production design. I don't know if I can think of a set of uglier space ships floating through the cosmos together. This movie is what happens if you take the pathos and backstory of the main characters in Seven Samurai and replace them with two-dimensional shells resembling all the intellectual capacity behind putting all your favorite action figures together and making up a reason for them to cross paths.

Most of it is quite awful, but it has a weird sort of charm to it. Peppard seems to be having fun while Richard Thomas seems confused all the time.

This movie is probably the book on "rip-off". It does not only copy ideas from great sci-fi movies and turns them into simplified, bland nonsense, but it also recycles sound effects from Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica. It's just laughable. I'm not even going to comment on the soundtrack. It's James Horner alright, no chance of missing that. :-) And what's with that ship that has boobs on it? Who designed this thing anyway?

This above-average Roger Corman production is lots of fun. The decent low-budget FX were reused by the ever-frugal Corman in later productions like _Galaxy of Terror_, _Forbidden World_, and _Android_.

It had an ok idea, and they tried pretty hard, but ultimately the characters lack nuance and the acting was pretty poor. Its only rated so high because I love sci-fi cheese.

This movie was the most 80's thing I've seen in a long time. Complete with neon lights on nearly every surface, white people as far as the eye can see, and a witty, sexy ship that looks like it could have come straight out of the pages of Heavy Metal magazine. (Honestly, the ship looks like a well-endowed woman.) I enjoyed the movie. It wasn't exactly good but it was entertaining. The main characters ability to hire a whole mercenary army in such a short time is commendable. I'd watch it again.

Significantly better than expected. Absolutely a low-budget Star Wars ripoff (crossed with a 7 Samurai ripoff), but one made by competent craftspeople that knows what it can pull off and squarely hits the bullseye of the best version of that. Intriguing worldbuilding, clever humor, good sets and creative aliens make this, quite frankly, better than some of the official Star Wars films.
