Frank Henenlotter adds another "what in the hell is this" movie to the horror genre. The plot is...absurd, in a perfect 80's type of way.

Frank Henenlotter's increasingly WTF, wonderfully weird, & bizarre 80's B-movie makes for a shockingly entertaining dark horror/comedy cult classic.

If you can manage to read the synopsis without wanting to watch this, then you probably shouldn't. Otherwise, it's game on for some cheesy 80's horror.

Its low budget shows: terrible acting and pretty silly looking effects elicit much laughter. But the idea is so bizarre and twisted, and the story itself continues to lead to such depraved alleys that I have to admire it for sheer audacity. It was a lot more fun and interesting than most other horror from this period.

Shy dude walks the streets of NY with his deformed brother in a basket. Murky, earthtoned and often disgusting. What's not to love here?

Does the whole "cheap 80's sleazy splatter horror" thing better than the Troma stuff like Toxic Avenger that came after. Really enjoyed the hotel front desk guy who's had enough of this shit.

The pinnacle of sleaze. If you must run into an absolute madman in a dark NYC alleyway, you want it to be the Frank Hennenlotter variety

Low-grade, at times laughably cheesy freakshow horror does have an earnest and sincere spirit, as well as a great feel for its seedy New York milieu which almost offsets its deficiencies. It's unfortunate that Henenlotter appears to lack the budget (or competent cast members) to successfully pull this intriguing premise off (and once the "brother" is revealed, the utter goofiness of the special effects rob him of his shock value pretty quickly). Points on the board for a good try.

I feel that Se7en owes some royalties for its famous line. Basket Case takes a wonderful premise and runs with it, budgets be damned. Charming and horrifying.

Outrageous horror comedy from Henenlotter is a spirited example of low budget ingenuity and a sleazy down and dirty tribute to old New York. B.C's scuzzy quality continues to appeal because of Henenlotter's complete commitment to its crazy conceit of a young man carting his deformed brother around in a big wicker basket in a bustling metropolis with murderous intent. The bad acting and formal crudity result in a genuinely off-kilter sensibility, and Belial is a thoroughly memorable movie monster.

There are some genuinely weird and creepy moments, they are unfortunately offset by it being terrible and cheesy. It knows this however so one can still have fun watching it.

This is not a good film, but you should watch it. The acting is downright terrible and the effects are pretty bad. Despite its shortcomings Basket Case still manages to be pretty damned creepy because of its premise.

It's as brilliantly ridiculous and hilarious as "Brain Damage" and is generally a better film, Belial is no Aylmer though, which is really what counts.

The production is raw to the point its charming, its 42nd Street location feels far more vivid than in more larger-scale stories, the actresses are unglamorous but more beautiful on screen, and Henenlotter's mix of sympathetic characters and eccentrics with bizarre and downright ridiculous special effects and gross-out gore creates a film that, on a second viewing, is far more imaginative and interesting than more glossier horror films.

Although there is actually something creepy about this movie, most of its charm is of the "so bad it's good" variety. Not just the acting but the dramaturgy and characterizations are hilariously caricaturistic across the board. The film actually has a great pace and is enjoyable regardless of its many laugh-out-loud "WTF" moments. For the very low budget, even the effects are pretty decent. Great popcorn movie to watch with friends.

Extremely gory (try to avoid the 83-minute R-rated cut) but also very funny, with authentically sleazy 42nd Street atmosphere and lots of oddly likable characters.

An 80's B-horror classic. It could have had a lot more impact with a higher budget and better acting, but there are a few dozens movies made during this time I can say that about. Bottom line: Good enough to watch.

You can add or remove 10 points from this score based on one's love of cheese slathered on their horror movies. The acting was terrible. The story was fun but not interesting. The special effects were the biggest highlight of this film. The monster, also one of the main characters of the movie, was creepy. I liked that it spoke to its brother through telepathy. It helped cement the bond between the two characters. I'm glad I watched it if only for the ability to answer a trivia question about it

Basket Case, indeed. Sou imensamente fã do Henenlotter ele tem o dom de fazer pequenos grandes filmes de horror com grande criatividade e baixo orçamento, mas gostaria que ele fosse considerado um maior mestre do horror do período do que de fato é mencionado. Darkflix TV.

Unfortunately doesn't feel like it has any of the underlying cultural smarts of Henenlotter's other body horror films, though this is still a fun watch. The monster and gore effects, although creative and kooky, aren't particularly impressive (especially the very rudimentary stop-motion moments). But technical aspects aside, Henenlotter does actually craft a well-told story, building up this squalid and trashy NYC environment as he drip-feeds out this fairly original horror tale.

It's a product of its time, and it has a pretty hefty number of problems. But, there's this weird charm to it that I just can't put a finger on. It's a cult classic for a reason, but it's definitely not everybody's cup of tea.

My understanding is people enjoy Basket Case in the same way they enjoy Troll 2. It is so bad that it becomes comical and beloved. I started out this way, but by the end of the first act I didn't find myself laughing as much.

Definitely a bad horror movie, but not devoid of entertainment. It's labeled as a comedy, but I'm not really sure if that's intentional. The story's shaky, but at least it makes decent sense. Despite some really sub-par special effects, it does a fair job of making the horror scenes shocking and weird.

I really admire directors who have a weird, simple idea, and are able to see their low budget project through to completion. Peter Jackson's Bad Taste springs to mind. I could tell Basket Case was a labor of love. I enjoyed the weirdness of the main character, and I really loved the creature itself; cheesy looking, yet oddly creepy. And the gore effects were surprisingly decent. A great movie to watch while drinking with your buddies.
