The crew is back in Barbershop 2. They're all still there in Calvin's shop, this time with Queen Latifah joining the fun as Gina, a stylist at the beauty shop next door. The world changes, but some things never go out of style -- you can still say anything you want at the barbershop. (MGM)

Even looser narrative than the already pretty thinly-plotted original, with a story that now spans multiple days (plus flashbacks to the 1960s). Frankly too much Cedric the Entertainer, a colorful side character from the first movie now elevated to co-lead, like a cake that’s half frosting. Also the movie just seems to kinda lazily end and roll credits without even wrapping up what seemed to be the main story, just, the barbershop will be fine, don’t worry about it.

If this semi-sequel semi-remake of Part 1 is ultimately unnecessary and redundant, it still has a nice relaxed and breezy charm which makes it good fun all the way, with ring-in Latifah almost stealing the film from under Cedric’s nose. Other than that, its overlength and indulgences can ultimately be forgiven, because this cast of characters are so much fun to hang out with – attempts at integrating historical and modern politics (and political movements) are spottily effective at best.

There were some good parts to Barbershop 2 but this movie seemed like a cash grab on the part of those involved. This is ironic because the whole movie is about trying to keep the neighborhood black and a part of the people who actually live in the neighborhood while Barbershop 2 seems to go in the exact opposite direction. The acting was great again and the actors were selected with their respective parts in mind which makes everything easier to stomach but the story is trash.

Not a good movie in any form of the word, but the real drop from the last one is delving into the personal lives of non-interesting characters. Basically all these characters are self-parodies, and none are too interesting. The humor can hit at points, but not often, and there's really nothing else remotely special about this.

A pleasant surprise! Not novel by any means, but features a irresistable cast and lots of great comedy.

If you loved the first film, you should be pleased with this faithful sequel, even if it suffers from fewer laughs, more padding, and a half-hearted attempt at political relevance. It's still a likeable entity, and if it delivers a few chuckles, and the occasional food for thought, it's a worthwhile watch for any who like their comedies to be sassy, smart, and full of heart.

Didn't deliver nearly as large of a dose of comedy as the first Barbershop, but it witholds a few good laughs.
