Barbary Coast

"I like the fog." But there is so much more to like about this film: poetic, poignant and witty dialogue (Hecht and MacArthur in fine form); performances full of verve from Robinson, Hopkins and in particular McCrea (his delivery of most of his lines is sublime); highly atmospheric sets (yes, the fog) matched by superbly framed shots; insightful commentary on the meaning of law and order; and highly entertaining fisticuffs (sometimes with guns). All made possible by master director Hawks.

Vigilantes! Not sure what this is. Was anyone? But Hawks can surely pace it, and entertaining -and thoughtful in that detached, relaxed Hawks way- it is. One of the best fogs ever, no wonder it's commented on.

"Barbary Coast" suffers from censorship problems, and much of what's happening in the story is left out. Just how much does Marry bend her principles? Joel McCrea, as the romantic interest, is a bust.

Doesn't quite his a nerve with me. And if one look at who is in this film, one will probable be disappointed. The film has it's moments, but for some reason it drags a bit between the highlights. Visually good, but not tightly enough written. But it does have old Harry Carey in a rare big production! Man, does he have a great grumbling voice! Too bad he usually gets wasted in cheap westerns with no budget. He belongs in this crowd!

Disappointing considering the talent involved.

Hopkins and Robinson both give classic performances, and Walter Brennan is "Old Atrocity" in his first great eccentric role.
