In town for a job interview, a young woman arrives at her Airbnb late at night only to find that her rental has been mistakenly double-booked and a strange man is already staying there. Against her better judgement, she decides to stay the night anyway, but soon discovers that there is much more to be afraid of in the house than the other house guest (imdb.com).

While Carpenters Halloween brings the terror to the suburbs after white flight this film flips it around and contemplates the horrors that are left behind. The inescapability of it all. For a first time director he sure balances a lot of tricky components well. Could’ve easily fallen off the rails in the second half when it becomes more of a gross out body horror piece. Still manages to keep the tension and actually milks a decent amount of laughs out of the situation. Immaculately shot.

This was a well-made modern horror, with some good ideas and an interesting premise. Among other things, the theme of what women face in respect of threat was explored well. After the low-key opening, it goes in quite a few mad directions. Definitely kept me guessing. If I was being cynical, I'd suggest that perhaps some of it was engineered to facilitate spin-offs; that's not necessarily a bad thing I suppose. Hard to say whether this will have longevity, but it's definitely worth seeing.

A long dark joke about the rotted underbelly of America.Where something like it follows is pondering why is the city we were told to be frightened of abandoned? Barbarian shows you the decay caused by Regan-era capitalism the sudden jump to California is a big winking moment about the way part of America are seen. A well crafted text on believing women(not just Long but in how Keith reacts to Tess’ basement discovery), about the way “redemption” can be used as weapon. So depraved. So much fun

The beginning was a really great way to set the tone. Skarsgard was perfectly cast due to what you expect from him these days when you see him. Up until about 3/4 of the way in, I had no idea where this film was going... which was a nice touch. The unpredictability was endearing. Characters make some really stupid decisions which made me subtract 5 points. The main villain is surprisingly sympathetic though. You just kind of have to accept that this kind of thing breeds a superpowered monster.

It's not the most original horror film ever but its simple story works really well. It goes wild at points and makes for a thrilling and even scary experience. *spoilers ahead* I love a good creepy creature film, so this was right up my alley. I do feel like they could've done more with the underground setting because the sheer horror stopped a bit after the first encounter.

Like many have said, the movie continued to reinvent itself and never once gave a single hint as to what was going to happen next or how it would end. Even without the way this movie is structured, I still think it’s very original and well made, even if piecing everything together as the movie is is much more fun. Great pacing, editing choices and performances from everyone involved on and off camera. A must-see for horror fanatics. I had a blast from beginning to end.

Zach Cregger emerges as a fully-formed horror maestro with Barbarian, probably the most thrilling new horror film I've seen since Get Out. Shows that with a superb script and skilled direction, there is still a lot that can be done in the horror genre to surprise and scare even those who think they've seen it all.

Easily one of the most playful Fuck All scripts in a while, and that fresh vibe is probably why it’s getting loads of praise. That said, it’s just a scuzzy b-film swapping an ‘80’s motel for an AirBnB which is not the stretch you may initially think it is. I once had to reset the fuse box outside wearing only a bath towel in Oakland to get the water to run for a rented tiny home, nothing that happens in this film surprised me.

Investigates the after-effects of the Reagan era's neoliberal revolution, deindustrialization, and ongoing racism/misogyny. We discover through Tess that Bonnie (white-progressive doc-maker) is as racist as the cops ignoring a lonely black woman, that Keith (white-ass romantic leftist) is a delusional liberal, that Hollywood elite are untrustworthy egoistic idiots, and that true liberation will come through women's solidarity and resistance towards' horror films' voyeuristic fantasies. Great.

Don't remember the last time I saw a movie like this, that zagged every damn time I thought it was gonna zig. I love what it did with an interesting structure and the way it relayed information: not too much, not to little, just right to create a tense, economical, clever and funny horror ride. (I hadn't even watched the trailer, I went in blind and I'm happy I did).

Without giving away too much for anyone who hasn’t seen it, I’d give the first act a score of 9.0, second act a score of 8.0, and the third act a score of 7.0. Worth a watch for sure - some redundant tropes but overall a breath of fresh air. I didn’t necessarily pick up on all the feminism social commentary I’ve read in other reviews, but see it in hindsight.

politics aside, i'd thought people were tired of done to death "monsters in your basement/walls/attic"-tropes. then they're suddenly excited about it again for one movie. how is it special? does it favor psychological depth to silly jump scares and gore? nope. does it bring new concepts? nope. is it particularly well written, shot or played? nope. i don't get it. i had to think of malignant a lot...similar structure from mystery to over the top ridiculousness. is that a formula for horror? nope.

Even though the twists were sort-of spoiled for me (my own damn fault for waiting this long) it still managed to surprise in all the right places. The gradual reveal of the setting, combined with the unsettling use of the mundane in the first act worked great, and despite going bonkers in the second half, it didn't feel cheap or unearned but thematically warranted. The midway point between The Hills Have Eyes and Parasite I suppose.

The acting across the board was all great. There's a lot of different horror elements at play here that I really liked. This is weirdly disturbing, campy and hilarious somehow all at the same time, I felt this was effectively unsettling throughout.

The plot is interesting and weird as hell, but it works for the creepy effect well enough. It's kind of impossible to tell what is going to happen next, and I always like that in a film! My only complaint is that while the lady in the movie was making quite smart decisions at first, towards the end of the movie the ones she made were just stupid and took me out of the movie some because the plot was railroaded forward by the character suddenly turning a bit too brave/dim-witted.

Like an upscale Jordan Peele-styled woke-horror, it nevertheless descends into the same cliches it seems to be rebelling against. Just because there's rub-your-face-in-it social commentary--which, these days, if the social commentary is in horror, it always seems to amass nonstop plaudits from film critics--it doesn't, however, excuse a rushed, sloppy final act. The film has so much more potential than this: the amassing of generational evil, the heart of darkness in Reaganesque suburbia, etc.

Some trickery with the editing plus social commentary: who's the real monster here? The murderer? The rapist? Or is it the murder-rapist? Cregger is asking the tough questions. As a side note, I don't understand why the bum lives there. Can't he be homeless somewhere else? I'd pick a spot with no 7ft-tall killer ladies roaming the streets.

To Barbarian’s credit, it wears its themes & parallels so heavily on its sleeve. It has a definite message that does resonate with much real societal concern and its ability to do so without being tacky in any significant way is very commendable. Its premise is dark & in some aspects, equally as bleak, and while that might be too much for certain audiences, it defines itself in a very unique space in horror as a whole. Definitely one of the better additions to horror these last few years.

“Barbarian” is a must-see for horror fans who are tired of predictable and formulaic films. Zach Cregger’s chilling vision is one of the most audaciously original horror films of the 21st Century, and perhaps ever. A really solid directorial debut, with great performances that are believable and fleshed out. You get to know these characters before the horror even starts and I think that goes a long way toward making the insane conclusion pay off. I also like the foreboding setting of a falling apart suburban neighborhood which makes the eventual monstrosities feel even more terrible when revealed. I also like the way the film isn't afraid to tonally shift which keeps you on your toes as a viewer.

This had the makings of a genuinely scary movie, tense, atmospheric, with good cinematography to help it along. Its stupidity seems tacked on, an afterthought, like someone went over the finished script and inserted the most confoundingly silly moments all over the second half of the movie especially. Another problem is the lead, who quite often decides that she doesn't really feel like acting - and crucially, this even happens when her character is presumably terrified.
