Barbaque

The score over at Rotten Tomatoes (100% as of June 2022) is 100% undeserved. This is a small, barely funny movie with nothing to say. Was there a message here? If so, they failed miserably trying to deliver it. Was it just trying to be funny? If so, they also failed quite badly. I can only think of a childish hatred for veganism as the reason for the, again 100% undeserved, high ratings.

Despite some deliciously funny moments, Barbaque is a filmed marred by its ending; which is abrupt, forced and contradicts the suspension of disbelief that previously demanded by the film. Foïs & Eboué provide strong enough performances to forgive the pacing issues throughout the film's sub-90 min runtime, as it plays out a modern interpretation of Sweeney Todd. I couldn't determine whether the film was satirising vegans, carnivores, both or neither, as the dialogue as bite but lacks conviction.
