It's Bambi. It's a fucking classic. I always wondered how all these female strippers get named Bambi when Bambi was clearly a male deer in this film. Dumbfounding.

A beautiful looking movie with adorable animation, refreshingly sparse but ever-so-cute dialogue, and a few hauntingly dark sequences thrown in that offer a startling and affecting contrast to the innocence that pervades the rest of the story. Putting the aforementioned scenes aside, the film isn't exactly edge-of-your-seat drama, action, or comedy, but it is charming in its simplicity and remarkable in how it pulls you in and melts the heart despite a lack of the aforementioned elements.

(2014-15 Disneython #5:) A dreamy, lyrical ode to nature, with so little dialogue and extended sequences set solely to classical music that it feels more like a visual poem than a narratively-driven film (even compared to earlier Disneys like Pinocchio and Dumbo). I did like it though, and found it visually beautiful. It's not exactly gripping in its pacing, though its roughly 70-minute runtime makes that not a big deal.

Boooringly boring. 1/3 of this movie is a joyful tralala~ with some jumping and no action. Why a young deer should be the prince of the forest? I don't like this monarchy thing. Also, the bunny is more cute than Bambi. This shows females as sexy but weak, unable to care for themselves, but when children show up, suddenly they have to be strong enough for them both. Bullshit & a sad story of life. The old owl and the spring time were the only interesting motives. Also, a plus for an ecological message.

It does come closer to a point of view than anything elese Disney ever tried, and it seems blind of a critic like Manny Farber to protest the loss of fantasy without seeing the parable of maturation. Unlike so many Disney projects, Bambi is about coming of age and discarding childhood. It may be the most beautiful film Disney ever made, as well as the toughest ordeal for any of his characters. In the course of under 70 minutes, the world changes.

This movie starts as like a preschool movie with lessons on sharing and nature. And then out of nowhere the Mum gets shot, it gets really dark, Bambi becomes the King of the Jungle with his deadbeat Dad. And then the movie ends. It's just weird. It's a good way to give your kids whiplash at an early age, I suppose.

Pauline Kael: "[Bambi's] relationship with his mother is tender and close, and when she is killed by hunters, small children in the audience frequently scream and cry. It all ends happily when Bambi, grown to staghood, marries the virginally sweet doe Faline. The picture is a classic of sorts, if only for the uncannily awful sound of the young woodland creatures in conversation; when puberty sets in and these voices suddenly change, Walt Disney begins to seem as berserk as Busby Berkeley."

With great animation that still holds up more than 60 years later and a memorable cast of characters, all it's really missing is any depth whatsoever. A plodding, slice-of-life style narrative combined with characters that, while enjoyable, are also rather one note, make it one of the definite weaker Disney classics for me. It's still a worthwhile watch just for its name recognition alone, but it wasn't quite for me.

I don't really know what to think about this one. On the one hand it's the most beautifully animated picture Disney has ever created at that time, but on the other hand Bambi as a protagonist can't do anything in the story. I feel like this film doesn't know whether it's wanting to be a documentary or a movie. Anyhow, it's certainly worth a watch just for the background art alone.

For a movie that's about woodland creatures it teaches kids some aggressively gendered expectations of behavior. And that's not okay. I remember crying watching this as a kid, but as an adult, I didn't feel much. It's cute and sentimental, but the plot really is too bare-bones to pull much emotional weight. Beautiful animation, though, some of the forest scenes look almost photo-realistic.

The animation is superb, and music is sweet! But the story gets very awkward whenever they're dealing with female characters (aside Bambi's mother and the very first appearance of Faline). This film is not suitable for little children who are not yet fit to handle an idea of loss of a parent (I saw this in theatre and heard some toddlers in distress - What were their parents thinking bringing them there?), and I wouldn't blame feminists who choose to complain, but for others this is pure fluff.

There are some justifiably venerated moments in this Disney classic, like the frozen pond and the death of Bambi's mother, but after the strong opening, the film loses its playfulness and a lot of its charm once the main characters grow up, and it becomes a rather dull affair.

In retrospect, it's incredible how gorgeous some of the 1940s Disney films are in a way that's not traditionally associated with Disney, and Bambi is no exception - when it's cute it's cute, but when it's horror it's fucking TERRIFYING. Too bad the plot is... well, non-existent, really.

Bambi is difficult to rate in this day and age. I'm tempted to call it more artwork than a film, as there's zero meat to the story and it's really just a showcase of timeless animation. Disney really did push the envelope as far as it would go with this one; it's staggering to think it was made in the early 40s. For children in that era this was remarkable, but they don't make 'em like this anymore for a reason. It's a tad dry and slow-paced. However, I have immense respect for what it is.

Sadly, this film has no appeal to anyone outside of the early youth. I watched it when I was a young kid and was distracted by it, but when I was eight it was boring.
