A twisted take on yuletide cheer that manages to have it both ways: it celebrates the holiday season by pooing on it. Thornton is sleaze personified as the drunken, degenerate, whore humping Santa who robs malls for a living with his foul mouthed pint sized 'friend'. Ritter is hilarious as a timid mall manager, while Mac is equally amusing as a shady security chief with a penchant for blackmail. What makes the film work ultimately is its complete disregard for good taste.

As a pitch-black parody of the typical Christmas movie, it confuses abundant profanity and fucking and cynicism with darkness and bite. As a corrective to the typical Christmas schmaltz, it undermines itself with an ending that seeks to absolve its bastard anti-hero and provide uplift.

It's hilarious. The idea of a mall Santa this horrible is pretty great (although one wonders how he doesn't get fired). The overall plot is mediocre (Thorton and Cox are con men who steal from the malls they work at every year), but there are enough laughs to keep you watching. At the end it turns out to be a nice little redemption story, and certainly worth the watch.

He's Santa, and he's bad. Get it? You will after 95 minutes of having it beaten into you. I won't say I didn't laugh... at some points, I laughed damn hard. But it wore out quickly while the movie trudged on towards its somewhat predictable conclusion. Could have used more Bernie Mac.

The fat kid's t-shirt is pretty funny, but really, I don't get what all the love for this movie is about. There's a lot of swearing. Hilarious? There are funny bits and all, but I guess this movie loses points for me because it was built up to be a lot more than what it is - a standard crude comedy.

Terribly crass without a protagonist you can like and damn is it hilarious. Billy Bob Thornton plays his seedy asshole role to perfection and would certainly reprise this character type in more comedies. John Ritter's supporting (and final) role is tear inducingly funny.

Viewed December 12, 2021. The humor is a bit too repetitive for me, and sometimes it's just foul-mouthed without being particularly clever about it. But Billy Bob Thornton is doing amazing work here, doubling as both hero and pathetic sad sack, and Terry Zwigoff's commitment to making the world of the film as depressing as possible helps to set this apart from other comedies of its era, and makes the slight sentimentality of the film's final sequences unexpectedly powerful.

It's easy to make a crass film that simply shocks and outrages the viewer in a superficial way. It is much more difficult to make a crass film that says something meaningful about the human condition. Zwigoff manages to achieve the latter and avoid the former by harnessing Thornton's (as Willie) contempt for the world and (self)destructive behaviour to make an important point about self-worth (particularly during the festive season); caring for yourself means caring for others.

A movie for those who prefer their humor brutal. What I really enjoy about these types of Christmas comedies is the main character learns the true meaning of the holidays, and their itty-bitty hearts grow three sizes. With this film though, such growth may not be a good thing... Sidenote: Thorton's ability to convey despair is a wonder.

Bad Santa. Even worse film. The film doesn't really elaborate on its title. There is probably about 20 minutes of plot, very little happens. I assume its meant to be funny, but this is a film that thinks just swearing, drinking, smoking, fighting and having sex is inherently funny. There's no context or shock added to any of it to actually make it funny. Imagine always sunny but with everything that makes that so funny removed. Billy Bob is quite good, if only he had decent comedic writing.

Bad Santa delivers a few laughs in an otherwise puerile film that often confuses "edginess" with rudeness. As an alternative Xmas movie it's fine, but taken on its own merit; Thornton's delivers the only convincing performance. Every other character is an ill-conceived stereotype that is often badly acted, playing out a clichéd screenplay. It's almost always crude, but only occasionally funny.

A really good anti-Christmas movie (I like the silly season, but I could do with more of these sorts of movies), featuring a Santa that lives up to the title -- he's pretty much Travis Bickle or The Butcher, but gets more pussy due to his festive costume. Although the story goes through the usual 'redemption' archetype, the film feels reluctant to subscribe to it entirely, still leaving a hefty amount of darkness lingering with the main character.

Bad Santa is definitely one of my favorite Christmas films. The black comedy wont cater for everybody and at times it's borderline ill taste. But I personally laughed all the way through. I'm not a lover of Billy Bob Thornton, but he is undeniably brilliant here. His character is an enjoyably foul mouthed but likeable ass hole. The miss matched supporting characters are hit and miss though. Ultimately Bad Santa is a dumb Christmas film, but it's a bizarrely heartwarming Christmas film also.

First of all, the term "dark comedy" is not the same as "raunchy and mean spirited" and, secondly, it generally suggests that something will be funny. This film goes for the obvious crude humor when, with a little more effort, it could be clever instead. And if the film had decided to stick with being unapologetically rude, I might have some respect for it. Instead, the movie decides that it wants to have an a heart after all - and just in time for Christmas too! Aw.

The comedy is pretty insufferable; it's mostly lambasting Thornton's character for being an asshole and fulfilling the typical tropes of 00's comedy in that it believes being as crude as possible is the height of hilarity. But outside that, the movie is just constantly mean-spirited in a way that perhaps is subverting the conventions of Christmas films but not in a way that's particularly thoughtful or engaging; rather, it just comes across as shallow derogatory sophistry at best.

This movie is awesome. It's a comedy that's also very dark in how it displays how shitty someone's life can be. I think that's what Funny People tried to do, but where that failed, this succeeds greatly. Evidently, the original Pasadena screening was even more depressing that it already is (I imagine it ended about three minutes earlier), so I wonder if there's a copy of that floating around somewhere.
