Bad News Bears

2005
Comedy, Sport
1h 53m
Grizzled former professional baseball player Morris Buttermaker (Thornton) is recruited by a strait-laced lawyer (Harden) to coach the Bears, a woefully inept Little League team. He's got to find a way to drive this gang of 12 misfits to a championship against their hated rivals: the Yankees and their overbearing coach (Kinnear). From the director that brought you "School of Rock" working with the writing team behind "Bad Santa" comes a hilarious 2005 homage to an irreverent 1976 comedy: "Bad News Bears." (Paramount Pictures)

Isn't it sad when a movie made several decades ago was more brave, funny, and realistic about kids?

There was a reason I skipped this in its original run. It tries to shock where it should try to take us into the messed up lives of these kids. I hope Linklater got paid well for this, to finance better things he made later. But hey, it was still better than the Best Picture winner that year.

Too laid-back to combat the creakiness of the plotting, and the superficial (if likable) characters are not complex or interesting enough to sustain a film that so slowly, resolutely marches directly where you know it is heading. Almost feels like someone looked at BAD SANTA and said “that, but in a truly kiddie centred film” – Thornton is nevertheless the best on field here, delivering a fine performance which makes his miscreant likable and even believable once he inevitably begins to soften.

An unnecessary remake to be sure, but it's nonetheless a very entertaining film that updates the material to reflect changes in the culture regarding children's sport and helicopter parenting. Kinnear's character is an improvement on the one in the original, and he really nails the familiar role of a hypocritical coach who takes his job way too seriously. Thornton is great at playing likeable scumbags, but Kraft is no substitute for O'Neil, and the stakes for the kids don't seem as high.

This was strangely joyless. The tone seems continuously confused. I can tell it's trying to be funny and sentimental sometimes, but I never actually felt it. I haven't seen the original, but I've gotta assume it's got more heart than this. Billy Bob Thornton mostly phones it in here, playing basically the same character he did in Bad Santa. At least we now know that Linklater was working on Boyhood (2014) at the time.

A film not wanting for detractors, but I had an absolute blast. Billy Bob Thornton does a hilarious job, and Linklater strikes a great balance between darkness and sentimentality.

It's too bad in a way, because the message at the end of the film is one kids and parents need to hear: Winning is less important than trying. Giving each other a chance is more important than victory. Losing hurts, but doing better than you thought you could is worth celebrating. (pluggedin.com)

Take an OK movie from the 70s and make it terrible. Although all the characters continue to be complete punks, none of them grow on you like the original. Also, the way this moves from scene to scene was just awful. It was like they watched a scene from the original, cleaned it up a little, said the words, and less than a 10th of a second later, moved on to the next scene. Hard to describe without seeing it, but it's bad. May have been better had I not just watched the original.

im really beginning to tire of billy bob thorton's acting, ie the asshole, with some slightly redeeming qualities. i dont like remakes too much, especially when there's no reason the kids wont like the original. this one is worse bc the kids are simply updated to be cruder. is that supposed to be better? kids watching this are supposed to learn something other than some new put-downs or rude behavior. and this is coming from someone who is no goody-goody. it was a pointless remake.

If I had to guess, I'd say that director Richard Linklater was one of those nerdy kids who always got picked last and sat on the bench for every team he ever played for. His understanding of sports might play well on the Knitting Channel, but here he looks like a complete idiot.

A well-directed movie with a quality message and a stand-up Billy-Bob performance. It has some really inspired moments of comedy, but I can't shake the feeling that this was completely unnecessary. The original was lude, crude and shockingly honest. This late in the game, it's all been done.

It had its moments, but not nearly the soul as its original. Sad Billy Bob couldn't have pulled this off given how large a baseball fan he is. Watch the original instead with Matthau.

I only saw this movie because it was directed by Richard Linklater, and I am glad I did. This really is a comedy, and while there is the whole inspirational coach and redemption and all that stuff underneath, this is still a pure comedy, and it's a very funny comedy. So if you want some laughs that are not bogged down by the predictable story they are in (Wedding Crashers), I definitely recommend this movie.
