It won't change your outlook on life or anything, but it's satisfying and even somewhat sunny. The humor is a mixed bag, for the most part it works. Hope has a commanding presence, the other actors are largely forgettable. The binaural soundtrack (letting you hear things from Bubby's perspective) was a bit gimmicky, though after a while you don't notice it. The director seems rather full of himself during the interview on the DVD, unfortunately, but that doesn't affect my opinion of the fil

Totally bizarre, but in large parts brilliant. There are just a couple of parts where the script loses its way, which keep this from being a work of genius. The parts played as a fish-out-of-water comedy are stronger than the parts as a religious allegory or morality tale. But together they create a nice balance. The underlying subtexts in this Australian film are complex and plentiful - as are the laughs, and grimaces. Why is this film, and Nicholas Hope, not more widely known?

More cloying than might be expected from its ~dark n disturbing~ rep. Obviously intended as a Candide-ish parable, and thus justified to an extent in its implausibilities, but it all gets to be a little maudlin and obvious by the end (dinner with the parents in particular). Certainly sticks in the mind and I guess I'm just instinctively sympathetic to this kind of transgression (and possibly inclined to consider it a comment on the commercialization of Daniel Johnston).

Disturbing and hilarious, disgusting but sympathetic, and, more than anything, really weird. Like a demented version of Being There.

A blurb on the cover of BAD BOY BUBBY compares it to BEING THERE, as directed by David Lynch. Apt, but at the same time it's damned original. Like BEING THERE, it meanders a bit, but it also boasts a bravura lead performance; Nicholas Hope is absolutely convincing as the otherworldly Bubby, a troubled innocent thrust into a mad world. Rolf de Heer's script takes him places you'd never expect, all of them fascinating--and often giddily entertaining. An unsung classic of the Australian absurd.

This odd ball blew my mind back in 90s. I see this story as an allegoria of a growing up man. The flick starts with a baby, who grows up in a shelter of mother, runs from home, comes back as a prodigal son, becomes a man, a father and finds his part of the society. Heer's world is brutal, alien and there's no God. To grow up you have to wipe out the burden of your parents. It's also very (anti-)religious, and a search of one's comfort and sexual orientation in hard life.

Not for the faint of heart. There are very extreme scenes. Despite this, if you have a very bizarre sense of humor, it's a fun movie and one you'll never forget. It's an incredible performance by the lead actress.

Grotesque, funny, disgusting. Got that special something that keeps your eyes glued to the screen. First 30 mins are grim as hell, then it fluctuates - sometimes feels like an experimental movie.

Strongest in the first act, with the shock of contrast wearing off after a while. So I thought I was over it halfway through but it comes back around. The first time he sings with the band is genuinely good art rock, and the whole thing of him exorcising his trauma through performance is pretty great. I tried my hardest to suppress my cultural cringe. Non-professional Australians are so awkward on camera

If Forrest Gump was about GG Allin... Inspired moments here and there but it mostly rides in on the shoulders of A Clockwork Orange. Frankly, this low-budget Aussie ramble doesn't deserve its arthouse plaudits. For something that is brimming with revolting edginess, it's astounding that its two hour runtime ends up feeling interminable. Pointless scenes abound that are neither funny nor insightful but seem tacked on for arthouse cred. For a better version of much of the same, see Fried Barry.

This movie is disturbing at times but really makes you think about fundamental human behavior in the absence of intervention by parents, and before empathy comes into play. Kind of a cross between Joker and Dogtooth.

An exceptionally black situational comedy of the sort that dooms itself to the fringe. A lot of it is just nasty, including animal cruelty and sexual assault (though not graphic). If you've got the stomach for it, it's a well-made and engaging (but slightly overlong) movie with enough integrity to explain its cult following.

What a ride! The most bizarre feelgood movie ever. Like Forrest Gump on datura. I have no idea what genre to ram this one into. Rolf de Heer somehow manages to take drama and black comedy into another dimension and back again in this rollercoaster of a movie. Not for the faint hearted.

Gleefully perverse and completely unpredictable, Bad Boy Bubby features an outstanding central performance from Nicholas Hope as a mentally-stunted shut-in discovering the outside world. It's as dark as fish-out-of-water stories come, as the opening scenes are disturbing to say the very least, but the adventure that follows is full of fun and humour, and the unique lead character shows an impressive consistency in his actions through the story.

Wow, this was better than I expected. The film is pretty damn bizarre and, frankly, disgusting for its first 30 minutes or so. But as it evolves, it proves itself to be intelligent and genuinely touching. The lead performance from Nicholas Hope is totally brilliant. If you can stomach the beginning of the film, you'll be rewarded. I liked it a lot.

An interesting premise to begin with, though it sure does rush through its story, not leaving quite enough time on each of Bubby's predicaments. Something like a more Australian and more fucked up version of Forest Gump, though a lot more cynical than sentimental. There's a great performance at the centre of the film that almost keeps it together, but I get the feeling Rolf de Heer keeps losing attention to focus on humongous breasts instead (no woman in this film wear a bra).

good, interesting and courageous movie. critique of society and religion made in both direct and more symbolical ways -the combination seems unique for me. some parts may be a bit long but overall it's all proper. even the happy ending is meaningful as a longing or wish.

What's almost as interesting as the film itself is the extra features on the DVD. Rolf de Heer explains a lot.

Unusual flick about a 35 year old man who has spent his entire life locked in a small apartment with his depraved mother, only to be suddenly forced out into the world by her death. He is completely childlike, and can only communicate by repeating things he's heard other people say. It sounds like it should be ridiculous but the performance of the lead actor Nicholas Hope is incredible, and he totally sells the bizarre transformation that Bubby undergoes. Strange but compelling.
