Pretty cool film, a sociopolitical allegory interlaced with western sensibilities and Tarantino-esque bursts of violence that gleefully takes aim at the current turmoil in present-day Brazil. Having visited the country a couple of times, it did a great job at portraying this type of tightknit society and close relationship Brazilians have with one another - at least when compared to our spoiled and impersonal Western culture. Não lixem com Bacurau, cara.

Bizarre but refreshing genre hybrid has a multitude of pieces and moving parts which don't (and wouldn't ever) fit together, but this community drama which veers off into sci-fi before becoming a truly demented spin on THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME (with Kier underplaying of all things!) is certainly never boring, even if the overarching point is difficult to discern. Sticks in the memory and would likely benefit a rewatch.

Starts off great with a very vital funeral scene. Unfortunately you don't get to know the village and its residents any further. Why introduce so many characters when they don't get to do anything and aren't explored any further? The bad guys were just clishés. It shows most in Udo Kier, who's just there because of his looks. The plot and the ideas seem forced and heavy handed and I was glad when it was over.

This is barely a movie, but a fucking blast in form of random neo-western images of Brazil facing neonazis with old guns and a huge sense of community. They come here to make their tropical purge. We respond with their heads standing in front of a closed church so we can take pictures and send it to our friends.

What starts as a Kiarostami-like look at a secluded Brazilian village gradually turns into something quite different. Eventually, the gradually part is abandoned and this goes full genre complete with Carpenter needle drops. This is wildly inventive and quite funny.

There's not a lot of depth to the characters after the first little bit, but it only flirts with most of the genres. It does a lot but some of it isn't handled in a very inspired way. For example: you can barely mention Sci-fi. Sure it's splatter fun but it doesn't do anything we haven't seen in that regard. Despite that, I do admire that it threw so many things together and it had satisfying violence. It also looked great and certainly wasn't boring. Some memorable scenes as well.

The anger towards Brazil's far-right political elite is palpably felt in this offbeat genrefuck that pays equal homage to pulpy John Carpenter and spaghetti western fare as it does to Brazil's own Cinema Novo movement of the '60s and '70s. Harrowing and timely.

I love Kleber Mendonça Filho's anger, and one part of this film really works, but whenever we turn to the outside threat / villain side of the story, something cringingly died in me...

There's so much going on here, not all of it worked. But its rooted in the a small rural town standing-up for themselves. Violent, outlandish and even charming. What was nicely done, was the village itself and the struggling people living there. You felt the community spirit, and that politician than came campaigning, just the right kind of sleazy to hate him. Where it failed, was the foreign group of hired assassins. Looked and felt so out-of-place.

Está muy buena toda la parte de la película que muestra la vida en el pueblo. El problema son todas las escenas con estadounidenses que no son más que un cliché de las ideas que se tienen respecto a ellos como psicópatas/imperialistas/racistas.

it was already a pretty tryhard mixed bag, but this really takes a nosedive for me when udo's crew turns up. it's almost as bad as when the english language bits start in squid game, and nothing is that bad.

I love the movie this is trying to be. As it is, pretty good, mostly dragged down by some embarrassing English-language dialogue and acting. I also felt like Mendonca’s offbeat style of pacing and characterisation doesn’t really work for this kind of story. But I was pretty into it by the end

has some cool moments, but i was let down by the quality of the writing. for suspension of disbelief to be achieved, given nazi tinted murder tourism is such an outlandish plot, the antagonists should've been grounded with believable motivations, but alas, their characterization was shallow and half-baked. to its credit, the opposite is true for the deep, humane characterization of the village folk, and had that been afforded to all of the characters in the film, it could have been a great one.

This has some pacing issues and too many characters, but it's a really interesting and unusual genre mesh and has some cool moments and a great climax. I feel like I would have gotten more out of it if I were more familiar with the domestic situation in Brazil, as it's clear that there's a lot of deeper allegorical and symbolic stuff going on, but it can be enjoyed even without knowing that. It's all over the place and not all of it works, but enough does to be very interesting.

shot extremely well, some very good gun stuff, an exploding head to give ari aster some stiff competition, but ultimately very weird and goofy. villains were basically cheap anime cartoon characters. there's a flying saucer of course? idk it was just kind of weird and dumb. I ain't even bothering to seed this junk. Edit: oh, this was the Aquarius dude, yeah that one sucked too, this guy sucks.

Begins as a attractive movie of magical realism, but then descends to excessively violent genre-film. But at least it is kind of anti-colonialist.

A remote isolated community band together to survive the onslaught of a group of batshit crazy hunters who seem to be motivated by killing people for sport. Perhaps it was about water rights? Who knows? The people's militia saved many lives and protected the village. It had a few surprisingly good special effects. Otherwise, it was ineffective at engaging the viewer or providing a clear compelling story. Worthwhile, but very shallow.

The irony is that the movie structure and technical format, that are very similar to a hollywoodian style (probably Mendonça's work that is the most similar to an american movie), end up being inconsistent with the message of the movie.

This is a MOVIE with capital letters, without a doubt. But Bacarau generates ambiguous feelings. Brazilian culture is represented by cinematography, acting and direction that are of a very high level, it is even mesmerizing - we don't see this type of film every day. However, the whole thing loses its originality and spice when the Americans and their intentions appear - and we've seen this type of film a lot.

Banane be banane be banana.

A didactic miscalculation on maybe the same level as Haneke's Funny Games, albeit with more local Brazilian color that goes to waste after we got the political point halfway in. The rest is inevitable bloodshed, still operating with the same dazed style as before. File under rich vs poor 2019.
